About University of Nebraska Medical Center

The groundbreaking work of the Global Center for Health Security at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine stretches from bench research to boots-on-the-ground, hands-on (gloves-on) training in faraway nations. From drug pipelines to close collaboration with the U.S. military, no one has more experience in isolation, personal protective equipment, emerging infections and biopreparedness. Our expertise is sought from around the world, and officially endorsed by the federal government. People all over the world know the work of the team at the internationally-acclaimed N...ebraska Biocontainment Unit, which set the global gold standard for safely treating special pathogens during the Ebola crisis of 2014-15. These dedicated professionals had trained for a decade in preparation for this moment. But, what once was a small, elite fighting force has become a movement on our campus and beyond. The Global Center for Health Security is the umbrella encompassing all biopreparedness, infectious diseases and high-consequence infections research, education and clinical care at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and its primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine. Some of the capabilities and programs included beneath that umbrella: Training, Simulation and Quarantine Center, the result of a nearly $20 million grant from the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Biocontainment Training Center, a high-fidelity simulation center that includes a mock lab and autoclave. National Quarantine Unit, the nations only federal quarantine facility, a 20-bed isolation facility that is the primary destination for people possibly exposed to high-consequence infections. National Ebola Training & Education Center, a network created with Emory University in Atlanta, and Bellevue Hospital in New York City, to ready the nations health systems for the next pandemic outbreak.
