Summary

As the Assistant Vice Provost for Advising Strategy & Student Success, you will work in partnership with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education to devise and communicate a vision for academic advising, bringing visibility to its importance for the undergraduate experience. You will provide guidance, advocacy and leadership for centralized best practices and create a campus-wide strategy for training and professional development. You will be a visible advocate for the work, expected to engage with local, regional, and national organizations, benchmarking, learning from, and sharing information about U-M's student success and academic advising efforts. This is a new and exciting role that requires an entrepreneurial spirit to build infrastructure and resources that will positively impact students and advisors broadly.

The working location will be a hybrid of remote and on-site and will report to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. Responsibilities*

Advising Strategy & Leadership (45%)

  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and overall administration for the development, coordination, and implementation of activities offered by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education related to advising strategy and interconnected aspects of academic student success
  • Create evidence-based mechanisms for assessment and continuous improvement
  • Provide oversight for the development of advising tools and technology to support advisors and students
  • Provide resources and guidance for decentralized and unit-based advising offices within schools and colleges
  • Work collaboratively with the U-M Advising Council on a range of issues (including HR, work-life balance, etc.) that impact academic advisors across the campus


Program Development/Training (35%)

  • Create and implement training programs for academic advisors, from onboarding of new hires to ongoing professional development for seasoned advising staff.
  • Ensure consistent application of training standards
  • Promote the use of validation theory of advising and other best practices and recommendations from NACADA and other relevant organizations.


Student Success Initiatives (20%)

  • Establish partnerships with Undergraduate Education units, the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Student Life, the Registrar's Office; the Well-Being Collective, and other stakeholders.
  • Launch and coordinate pilot initiatives to enhance student academic success, especially those designed to close gaps in the university's retention and graduation rates

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree or an equivalent combination of bachelor's degree and work experience.
  • 8 years of experience providing, or supervising teams that provide, direct student support.
  • 5 years in a strategic or leadership capacity focused on direct student support.
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing evidence-based practices promoted by NACADA.
  • Applied experience in academic program design, implementation and assessment based on data and research.
  • Expert proficiency in developing holistic equity, inclusion, and belonging practices responsive to student and programmatic needs.
  • Previous experience working across diverse communities of stakeholders including students, parents, faculty and administrators.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in higher education advising and student support.
  • Proficiency with software systems and tools that support the work of advisors.
