The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 for the Department of Research with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.

Core Job Functions

* Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record.

* Reason for visit

* Tangent screen visual fields

* Chief complaint

* Basic ocular motility

* History of present illness

* Pupillary evaluation

* Basic review of systems

* Ocular surface assessment

* Review systemic and ocular medications

* Eye drop administration

* Record allergies

* Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care

* Pharmacy information

* Pachymetry

* Family, social, medical, and ocular history

* Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses

* Visual acuity at distance and near

* Color vision test

* Lensometry

* Stereopsis test

* Manual refraction

* Sensorimotor exam

* Confrontational fields

* Automated & manual perimetry

* Humphrey visual fields

* Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields

* Amsler Grid visual fields

* Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.

* Provides patient-centric care. Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.

* Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.

* Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.

* Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.

* Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.

* Meets daily productivity goals. Maintains JCAHPO certifications.

* Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.

* Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.

* Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.

* Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.

* Works evenings and weekends as needed.

* Performs organizational duties as assigned.

* Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.

* Facilitates motility exams.

* Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.

* Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams.

* Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.

* Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives.

* Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members.

* Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent

Required Certification and Licensing:

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)

Experience:

2 years of relevant experience

* Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform.

* Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups.

* Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.

* Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe.

* Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Additional Job Description - Department Specifics

* Acquire and maintains visual acuity certifications to be used in clinical research.

* Perform refractions.

* Additional exams such as Humphrey visual field testing, keratometry, axial eye length measurements and IOL calculations may be required to be performed as well as any modality requested by a sponsor or principal investigator.

* Gain and maintain CITI certifications group one conflict of interest and GCP certification before being involved with clinical research studies.

* Coordinate and communicate with research and non-research staff to ensure effective patient workflow. Inform supervisor of any workflow issues that need to be addressed.

* Creates protocol summaries for backup staff.

* Learn to successfully navigate multiple submission and certification portals independently

* Maintain records of all study visits and provide reports and assessments when requested by the supervisor.

* Assist clinical research personnel with basic tasks in the performance of the study including but not limited to biological sample collections and shipment, preparing for clinic, and consent clinical study patients as needed.
