Job Description

Pediatric and NICU Inpatient Dietitian PRN

Under limited supervision, collaborates with members of the healthcare team, attends rounds and independently provides optimal nutrition care to pediatric patients at high nutrition risk (i.e..: receiving enteral or parenteral nutrition), based on own knowledge and clinical skills. 

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Under general supervision, collaborates with members of the healthcare team, attends daily rounds and provides nutrition care to pediatric inpatients in a fast-paced setting.
  • Independently performs the nutrition care process, including nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring, and evaluation, specific to age and medical status.
  • In collaboration with team, develops an interdisciplinary nutrition plan of care. Proficient in enteral and parenteral nutrition in pediatric patients.
  • Provides education, training, and expertise to members of the healthcare team and dietetic interns to advance their development in the field.
  • Pediatric coverage includes rotations between the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the pediatric progressive care unit (PPCU), and the neonatal intensive care unit NICU. The PICU provides care to critically ill patients ages neonate through young adult with medical, surgical, and cardiac surgery diagnoses. The PPCU provides care for children from birth through 21 years of age. PPCU patients include general medicine, hematology, oncology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, nephrology, pediatric survey and orthopedic patients.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics or related field required.
  • Registration by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) required.
  • Current licensure in the state of Maryland as a Dietitian/Nutritionist required.
  • Four (4) years clinical experience is required as a Registered Dietitian at a hospital facility, including completion of UMMC initial review preferred.
  • Prior completion of a Specialty Fellowship Program or Active Specialty Certification: CNSC, CDE, CSR, CSP, CSO, IBCLC is required. Maintenance of 30 CEUs/2 years (20 CEU in a specialty area every two years) is required.
  • Current on all mandatory classes/training Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology as they relate to nutrition is required to make clinical decisions regarding a patient’s nutritional care plan.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively communicate with patients and in making recommendations to physicians and other allied health professionals related to the patient’s plan of nutrition care.
  • Demonstrated evidence of professional growth and development through: enrollment in degree program, teaching in formal hospital programs or outside of hospital.
  • Ability to establishes and maintain courteous and effective relationships that foster quality customer service, demonstrates sensitivity and awareness of customer needs when dealing with patients/visitors, co-workers and healthcare staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and use an online computer system to enter and manage patient information.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, work independently and as part of a team, ability to lead a small project team, plan and organize schedules and have effective time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the procedures, practices, policies and fundamental concepts in the assigned unit/division; and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide nutrition care appropriate to the age of the patients served for given service. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
