JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of a licensed pharmacist, fills medication orders and maintains inventory of drugs and supplies by following established standards and procedures. Properly handles non-hazardous, hazardous and controlled substances by observing proper safety procedures consistent with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards and federal and state regulations. Serves as a primary trainer for pharmacy team members. Assists pharmacy leadership in ensuring pharmacy and team member compliance with USP <797> and/or <800> standards. Acts as a role model, provides training, and supports the pharmacist-in-charge and/or leader with the daily activities of the pharmacy technicians.

Qualifications

Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Valid Registration as Pharmacy Technician by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy is required. Associate’s degree is preferred. National Certification (CPhtT) is required (or must be obtained within six months of hire).

Preferred:

  • At least two (2) years previous hospital pharmacy technician experience is required. At least one-year previous experience in compounding low and medium risk sterile preparations.

  • Skills & Abilities: Ability to solve mathematic/algebraic calculations required for dosage determinations and solution preparation. Ability to perform technical functions associated with drug distribution systems; input data accurately; maintain confidentiality. Strong written and oral communications skills. Working knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terms, drug names, abbreviations, and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, administering, and charting of medications in the institution. Working knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled during preparation and delivery. Demonstrate working knowledge of drug dosages, routes of administration, and mechanical or automated delivery systems; Working knowledge of the procedures and operations related to compounding and labeling of drug products; Working knowledge of the procedures and operations related to aseptic (IV) compounding and parenteral admixture operations.
