University of Maryland Medical System is Hiring a Clinical Support Specialist - FT Day Near Bel Air, MD

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides a variety of clinical support including patient transport, patient sitter, housekeeping, and supply management. Transports patients to and from various treatment areas, including but not limited to the Observation Unit and Behavioral Health inpatient unit. Ensures infection prevention using proper cleaning techniques when cleaning and disinfecting medical equipment in between patient use. Delivers and maintains supplies and equipment and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment. May provide temporary sitter role by providing direct observation of patients to ensure patient safety. 

JOB TASK LIST 

1. Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current patient transport practices. Transports patients according to priority and adapts to changing priority appropriately. Safely and efficiently moves patients on stretches, beds and wheelchairs with accompanying equipment such as IVs, IV pumps and oxygen.

2. Correctly verifies patient identification using approved hospital patient identifiers. Assures medical record and patient supplies are securely taken/returned to proper location.

3. Utilizes appropriate infection control standards and techniques in all aspects of work and with handling supplies. Wears appropriate PPE. Cleans stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and other appropriate equipment in between patient use using manufacturer’s recommendations.

4. Performs and assist with patient lifts and patient transfers effectively and safely using lift devices as appropriate. Monitors patients and environment and responds appropriately to eliminate the risk of patient falls. Ambulates appropriate patients using proper body mechanics and/or equipment.

5. Ensures appropriate linen is in place to care for patients. Uses linen to cover chairs, stretchers, beds and pillows. Covers patient with appropriate sheet/blanket to ensure modesty warmth and privacy.

6. Maintains supply of oxygen tanks and stores cylinders safely. Completes rounds throughout shift to assure stretchers, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks are located in appropriate locations and to collect, clean and re-distribute medical equipment and supplies. 

7. Monitors supplies and restocks shelves and carts as requested by clinical personnel and in partnership with Materials Management personnel.

8. Assures hospital environment is maintained by ensuring cleanliness of patient care areas, hallways and waiting areas. Supports quietness of the environment. Performs Environment of Care rounding monthly for ED and Observation unit.

9. When in sitter role- remains with assigned patient at all times to provide a safe environment. Considers factors related to patient safety. Communicates patient care needs to appropriate team member. Identifies situations requiring immediate intervention and acts accordingly.

10. Reports problems and resolutions regarding all customers using appropriate line of authority, demonstrating effective communication skills. 

11. Integrates ethical provisions and integrity in all areas of practice and with relationships with peers, colleagues and leaders. Partners with others to create a positive patient and family care environment. Demonstrates active listening skills, clear communication and empathetic presence with everyone.

12. Demonstrates self-directed learning behaviors as evident in timely completion of all mandatory education and competencies. Attends team meetings, safety rounds, and in-services on a regular basis. Reads and responds to emails in a timely manner.

13. Contributes to the completion of department specific Performance Improvement activities and goals.

14. Answers telephone using proper telephone etiquette by identifying name and role.

15. Prioritizes and completes work within scheduled hours.

16. Utilizes time clock and proper scheduling guidelines and policies when completing work schedule, putting in requests for vacation, holiday sick time and properly completing the meal break question every shift.

17. Communicates effectively with patients, families, co-workers, physicians and other health care workers. Maintains high customer service by providing directions to visitors and representing the hospital in a positive manner in all interactions. Acts as an advocate for patient experience by performing patient rounding and service recovery.

18. Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competencies for the toddler, pre-school, school age, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

19. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Education & Training: High School Diploma or GED required.

Work Orientation & Experience: Previous patient care or customer service work is preferred.

Skills & Abilities: 

Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop and use proper body mechanics. Must be able to read, write, comprehend and communicate in the English language. Have the ability to follow directions, organize and manage time effectively, setting appropriate priorities. Excellent customer and interpersonal skills. Integrity, teamwork and innovation. Responds to emergencies appropriately and maintains patient confidentiality.
