The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking candidates for the part-time seasonal Head Coach for the Equestrian Club. The UMF Equestrian Club provides a welcoming environment for all students of UMF who have a love for horses. The Club provides members with horse-related activities, to foster interest in various disciplines of riding, to enable members to learn about horses and related subjects and to provide opportunities for members to compete, if they wish, in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (HSA).

A typical season is September though November; March and April.

Essential Duties

  • Attends all practices and events. Instructs members on horsemanship (the ability to ride horses) and the care of horses.
  • Maintains annual paid membership to the Certified Horsemanship Association.
  • Must be familiar with UMS Code of Conduct and the UMF Club Sports Code of Conduct.
  • Addresses/mediates any misconduct within the team leadership and/or team members. Consult with the supervisor as needed for possible violations.
  • Collaborates with team leadership to organize riding events and events with Martin Woods Farm.
  • Notifies the club president when unable to attend practice sessions.
  • Participates in the annual review process by supervisor and team players.
  • Works collaboratively with other Club Sports Coaches.
  • Serves as an effective role model.
  • Advises team with the development of the annual club budget proposal.
  • Reserves University vehicles.
  • Transports club team members.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Basic Certified Horsemanship Certificate to include: sufficient experience with horses and people to assume responsibility for the safety/wellbeing for all; demonstrate the ability to catch, lead, groom, tack, and handle the care of horses without assistance.
  • Must be able to ride/perform above certified level and be able to mount, dismount, ride at walk, trot, and canter/lope on the correct lead with good form and control.
  • Valid Driver’s License (in good standing based on UMS standards).
  • Understanding /knowledge in concussion protocol processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years of coaching experience at the college/university level.
  • CHA Level 2 Instructor or above, and/or CHA Trail Guide Certification.
  • Certified in American Red Cross CPR and AED training.
