Statement of Job:

The University of Southern Maine’s Department of Biological Sciences invites applicants for the position of Lab Associate in Microbiology. The Lab Associate will be responsible for implementing, maintaining, and coordinating all Microbiology Laboratory (BIO 282) set ups, and for contributing to the teaching of Microbiology labs each semester: summer, fall and spring. For summer sessions, this position is responsible for setting up and teaching between one and three seven-week sessions. For fall and spring semesters, this position is responsible for setting up four to five sections and teaching three of those sections each semester. Each section meets for two hours twice a week, typically between 8:00AM and 6:00PM.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Development, improvement, and implementation of laboratory activities including laboratory pedagogy and curriculum.
  • Preparation, set up, and disassembly and clean-up of all twice-weekly labs.
  • Acquisition and storage of the requisite lab materials.
  • Coordination with other lab instructors to provide uniformity of the delivered information.
  • Instruction and management of undergraduate assistants.
  • Communication with faculty, USM offices, and outside contacts.

This is a full-time position with an annual salary up to $52,100 commensurate with experience. This position is located on the Portland Campus and is an in-person teaching position.

Qualifications:
  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent in Microbiology or a related field.
  • Prior teaching experience in Microbiology.
