Position Title: Fabrication Laboratory Technician

Department: 2110|School of Architecture/Design

Responsibilities:

The Fabrication Laboratory Technician, reportingto the Director of Research Initiatives and Fabrication Facilities, isresponsible for maintaining the operation of the Fabrication Facilities of theSchool of Architecture and Design and assisting in the research outputs ofthose facilities. This entry level position is ideal for a skilled problemsolver and designer/maker interested in furthering their skills in both digitaland physical fabrication.
Description of Facilities
Fabrication Facilities of the School ofArchitecture and Design include a Digital Fabrication Lab with laser cutters, avariety of 3D printers, a CNC mill, a CNC router, and a CNC plasma cutter; aGeneral Fabrication Lab that houses tools and equipment associated withwoodworking; a Metals Fabrication Lab with forging, welding, and othermetalworking tools and equipment; a Sewn Goods Lab equipped with sewingmachines and associated equipment; a Plastics Lab including forming and moldingequipment; an Electronics Lab for circuit and controls testing and prototyping;and Lighting and Environmental/Materials Labs that house testing and evaluationequipment.
PrimaryResponsibilities:-Works with faculty, staff, and students to provide support necessary to realize research and design concepts by providing guidance on best methods of the fabrication of models, prototypes, building projects, and/or other deliverables.
-Performs or facilitates necessary maintenance, upgrades, and repairs to all Fabrication Facility tools and equipment to ensure safe operation and optimal utilization.
-Assists in the development of best practices for safe use of fabrication facilities and provides oversight to faculty, staff, and students regarding proper use of, and safety concerns associated with, all fabrication equipment.
-Communicates with the SoAD Director of Research Initiatives and Fabrication Facilities any needs or issues relating to the fabrication facilities or user behavior.
SecondaryResponsibilities:-Performs regular preventative maintenance on all tools and equipment to ensure continued operation and assists in the set-up of new tools and equipment in support of fabrication facilities.
-Ensures that the fabrication facilities are clean, orderly, functional, and safe.
-Maintains safe work practices and ensures faculty, staff, and students maintain safe practices when equipment and tools.
-Conducts safety and use training for students, faculty, and staff needing fabrication facilities.
-Performs duties of Safety Coordinator for the first floor of Fletcher Hall.
-Assists in working with faculty, staff, and students to establish and maintain viable research agendas related to fabrication and materials research.
-Assists in the development, execution, and updating of long-term (5-year) action plans regarding research activities and facility needs.
-Assists in pursuing grants and other internal and external funding in support of Fabrication Facility action plans.
-Assists in managing budgets associated with fabrication facilities. This is to include responsibilities for working with UL -Purchasing in obtaining quotes and creating orders for large equipment (additions, upgrades, and replacements).
Limited supervision of studentworkers.
-Assists in developing work schedules for student workers.
-Assists in defining job responsibilities for student workers.
-Assists in creating cleaning and maintenance schedules for student workers.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s Degree 

-OR 5 years' experience in Fabrication and Fabrication Equipment Maintenance may substitute for the degree requirement.
