Position Title: Assistant Professor of Music Education
Department : 2120|Music
ResponsibilitiesPOSITION DESCRIPTION: The position is a 9-month regular continuing faculty tenure-track (probationary) appointment with the academic rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment requires faculty members to serve a probationary period of employment before a consideration for tenure is made.
The rank of Assistant Professor is based upon performance as well as potential. The candidate must have a strong academic record and should hold the appropriate terminal degree.
All regular, continuing faculty will follow one of four workload tracks. A faculty member’s track will be determined in consultation with his/her department head and dean. A typical workload for a tenure-track faculty is moderate research/creative/grant/contract productivity, 3/3 class load per academic year and constitutes 55-65% of the total workload, and academic advising and service to the department and university.
Responsibilitiesinclude but are not limited to: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Music Education, supervise Music Education student cohorts in instrumental and vocal areas in field experiences and student teaching, act as primary liaison between the School of Music and Performing Arts and the College of Education, and with local field experience mentor teachers. Other areas of teaching may be possible based on candidate’s expertise and interest. Applicants are expected to have a robust academic record, be active educators in their field, serve as mentors to students, work with colleagues to assess and improve curricula, conduct research and/or creative activity in respective area of specialization, and engage in institutional citizenship through active engagement at the departmental, college, university, community, and professional levels. Recruiting and active communication with community and school music programs will be required.
The Department: The School of Music & Performing Arts offers the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in performance, music media, theory/composition, piano pedagogy, and jazz studies as well as the Bachelor of Arts in Music. There is also the Music Education-Grades K-12 concentration in music-vocal, or concentration in music-instrumental. The B.A. in Music offers concentrations in music business, traditional music and recording arts. The Master of Music degree allows students to specialize in the concentrations of performance, music education, theory/composition, conducting, or pedagogy. All music degrees are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate preferred, ABD considered.
  • 2 years’ experience teaching music in elementary and/or secondary schools
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in Music Education
  • 3 years’ experience teaching music in elementary and/or secondary schools
  • Experience teaching at the collegiate level
  • Demonstrated record of active research
  • Demonstrated record of engagement in professional Music organizations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to working in collaboration with faculty, administrators, and community members
