University of Kansas is Hiring a Hawk Link Peer Mentor - Student Hourly POOL Near Lawrence, KS
Position Overview
Hawk Link is seeking exceptional student leaders passionate about engaging students from diverse backgrounds throughout their KU experience. Student leaders are a vital member of the Hawk Link Success Team and will play an active role in supporting students in their academic and professional goals by acting as mentors, role models and community builders. The student leader role will be involved in Jayhawk JumpStart, in early August. Throughout the academic year, student leaders are expected to commit to at least 6 scheduled hours per week to support various center initiatives including mentoring, campus outreach, community engagement and program facilitation. Though there will be limited student leader positions available throughout the summer, there are opportunities for summer hours. Unit Overview: Hawk Link supports the development of students through intentional educational opportunities designed to foster academic success and belonging. Through holistic engagement and community based support, Hawk Link provides academic and personal success coaching to students, and cultivates opportunities designed to facilitate a successful transition into the academic and social community at KU, from pre-enrollment to graduation and beyond. Hawk Link also assists students with navigating campus, identifying campus resources, and linking students to educational opportunities. Hawk Link is part of the Equity and Success Initiatives department within Student Success Initiatives under the Academic Success umbrella.
Job Description
Responsibilities of the Peer Mentor include (but are not limited to the following): Jayhawk JumpStart Student Leader:
Serve as a group facilitator and positive role model for up to 35 JumpStart participants.
Facilitate trainings, activities and sessions for JumpStart participants focused on developing a sense of community and belonging as assigned
Serve as a resource to answer questions and support students in their transition to KU
Participate in all required JumpStart programming planning, set up, facilitation and clean up
Must be available 40 hours that align with the JumpStart program schedule
Academic Year Peer Mentoring
Work 6-10 schedule hours per week between the hours of 10am and 8pm.
Provide proactive support for a caseload of up to 35 students throughout the academic year by maintaining regular and timely communication with students utilizing phone calls, text messages and e-mails in accordance with peer mentor communication timeline. Peer mentors working JumpStart will keep the same caseload throughout the academic year.
Meet one-on-one with students as requested for more in depth conversations around academic skill development, campus engagement, and general wellness.
Provide a small scale community builder to bring peer mentor group together at least once a month.
Maintain accurate notes of meetings and conversations with students utilizing Jayhawk GPS
Refer students to campus resources when appropriate
General Responsibilities
Accurately report time worked utilizing KU’s timesheet system
Actively participate in training including online training, in-person training at the beginning of each semester, and ongoing leadership development opportunities
Meet one-on-one with your supervisor twice a month to provide updates you your general wellbeing, needs and mentees
Attend peer mentor staff meetings twice a month for program updates
Monitor and respond to messages from mentees in AREC e-mail in a timely fashion
Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Undergraduate student at KU in good standing, at sophomore classification or higher, enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, and a KU Cumulative GPA of a 2.75 or higher
Availability to attend all JumpStart trainings and events in early August
Availability to commit to at least 6 hours of schedule work during the academic year (some nights and weekends may be requested)
Strong organizational and time management skills as determined by interview materials
Knowledge of diverse campus populations and value creating inclusive and equitable environment
Demonstrated creative and critical thinking skills as determined by interview materials
Strong communication skills as demonstrated by application materials
Strong knowledge of campus resources
Preferred Qualifications
Personal experience as a first-generation college student, student of color or Pell-eligible student or experience with supporting these populations
Actively involved in the KU or Lawrence community
Experience with coaching, mentoring, or facilitating
Experience with program planning or community building
Strong administrative skills
