Position Overview
The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) is seeking a skilled field hydrogeologist to contribute to field work on a variety of projects. Core areas this researcher will be involved in include development and sampling for a statewide groundwater quality monitoring network, groundwater level monitoring, installation and maintenance of monitoring equipment, and contributing to other projects as needed. The ideal candidate will have experience and enthusiasm for field-based hydrogeological research, strong organizational abilities, and an ability to work independently and collaboratively. Job Description
30% Provide support to the water quality program and assist Geohydrology staff in field work related to other hydrogeologic research projects. Acquire data and samples, independently perform quality-control assessment and preliminary interpretation of data from the field and hydrologic sensor network and assist in the presentation of project results.
20% Coordinate fieldwork in consultation with Geohydrology and other KGS staff and external cooperators/contractors. Assist in the planning and coordination of field work, develop plans related to field installation and data acquisition, and work with outside contractors as needed for activities that cannot be achieved with KGS equipment.
20% Provide technical assistance for Geohydrology research instrumentation. Acquire, design, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot research instrumentation and equipment independently with little to no direct supervision. Define user protocols for field and laboratory equipment. Assist in the preparation of specifications for equipment purchases. Maintain familiarity with literature regarding recent developments in relevant field techniques.
20% Assist in the operation, maintenance, and scheduling of the Geoprobe direct-push unit, the DTS fiber-optic system, and other field equipment.
10% Assist in miscellaneous field and public activities for the KGS as appropriate.
Position Requirements
  1. Physical ability to repetitively lift heavy items up to 50 pounds and occasionally carry items up to 100 pounds short distances with or without reasonable accommodation.
  2. Physical ability to work outdoors in all Kansas weather conditions.
  3. Ability and willingness to be away from home base for several days and occasionally for longer periods depending on project needs.
  4. Valid driver's license by start of appointment.
Required Qualifications
  1. B.S. degree in natural science or engineering with an emphasis on hydrogeology.
  2. Three years of experience that includes a combination of the following:
  • Field work related to hydrogeologic research investigations, including instrumentation and equipment setup and maintenance, equipment fabrication and installation, data and sample acquisition, and preliminary processing of acquired data.
  • Experience in providing written activity reports as needed for project assistance.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Master's Degree in natural science or engineering with an emphasis on hydrogeology and at least three years of experience in hydrogeologic field investigations.
  2. Experience in operating and maintaining direct-push field equipment such as a Geoprobe.
  3. Experience in coordinating field work in consultation with other staff and external cooperators/contractors, including development of work plans, developing specifications for field equipment and installation, and coordination of scheduling with others.
  4. Experience in hydrogeological site characterization.
  5. Experience with data processing using spreadsheet programs.
