University of Iowa Center for Advancement is Hiring a Vice President of Development, Health Sciences Near Iowa, IA

Advances the University of Iowa by providing strategic leadership and oversight for all Health Sciences fundraising programs. Maintains relationships with university administrators and ensures their full trust and confidence in our organization. Works with Development leadership and Data Analytics to develop strategies that strengthen the organization’s fundraising capacity. Manages a portfolio of active principal and major gift prospects.

**Position allows for telecommuting/work from home (up to 2 days per week depending upon business need and leader approval). Our office is located in Iowa City, IA.**

Organizational Leadership

  • Provides operational leadership and oversight for all Health Science fundraising programs.
  • Offers direction and insight to AVPs and EDs on the development of strategic fundraising priorities and plans for their areas
  • Provides strategic leadership and direction needed to drive increases in development activity and major gift support; Seeks innovative ways to surmount obstacles
  • Maintains relationships and ongoing contact with deans, directors, and other university administrators to ensure their full confidence and trust in our advancement approach
  • Works with Data Analytics to develop strategies that strengthen the Health Sciences fundraising capacity
  • Strives to maintain a cohesive and high-performing development department that benefits from synergy among multiple teams from across the organization
  • Champions and drives change, anticipating resistance and involving key stakeholders in providing assurance and the business case for change
  • Contributes as a leader in the UICA strategic planning process, guiding development of goals and initiatives and delivery of measurable outcomes that advance the UICA and support the University of Iowa’s strategic initiatives
  • Looks across the Health Science team to identify unique strengths among staff and maximize talent for purposes of succession planning
  • Keeps abreast of and contributes to industry trends and advances through continuing education and interaction with external colleagues; Leads the way in setting and applying innovative best practices in the areas of fundraising and team leadership and seeks to present these best practices at a regional and national level to other fundraising leaders.

Donor Engagement

  • Manages portfolio of active principal and major gift prospects ($100,000 ), facilitating movement though the donor process in order to meet expectations for solicitations, gifts closed, and average gift size
  • Interfaces with other senior and constituent fundraisers, as appropriate, to develop broad and/or meaningful strategies for assigned principal and major gift prospects.
  • Models the role of a trusted philanthropic advisor and identifies meaningful donor-centered ways for prospects to achieve their desired impact while meeting institutional funding needs
  • Prepares partners/leaders as necessary for donor meetings and guides their critical role in the giving conversation and donor process
  • Develops, implements, and participates in stewardship activities for donors as relevant (e.g., acknowledgement letters, publicity events) 
  • Conducts all activities, particularly those involving patient data, according to established laws, policies, procedures, and standards and with the full support of UICA, UI, and UI Health Care as relevant

 Program Leadership

  • Plans and oversees the overall operational, reporting, budgetary, and financial responsibilities of assigned UICA unit
  • Develops and maintains work systems, procedures, and productivity standards that advance the mission and goals of the UICA unit and enable optimum performance of the people and other resources within it
  • Allocates resources to effectively accomplish the work of the UICA unit
  • Monitors, evaluates, and aims to improve effectiveness of unit operations
  • Makes business decisions that are consistent with UICA mission/vision and our organizational culture and values

 People Leadership

  • Manages all aspects of the employee lifecycle from recruitment and onboarding through separation
  • Empowers employees to take responsibility for their jobs and prioritizes trust and transparent communication as the basis for a productive relationship
  • Supports employees in developing meaningful goals aligned with those of the UICA unit and UICA and in achieving/surpassing those goals
  • Inspires performance through clear expectations and ongoing feedback
  • Supports employees struggling to meet expectations for productivity, quality, and goal attainment
  • Identifies and anticipates competency gaps within individuals and the UICA unit as a whole
  • Motivates, develops, coaches, and rewards employees for growth in competencies over time, leading to new opportunities for subject matter expertise or leadership
  • Partners with Talent Management to achieve optimum results for employees, self, UICA unit, and UICA
  • Creates a work environment that is consistent with UICA mission/vision and that emphasizes our organizational culture and values

Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree 10 years of relevant development/fundraising experience (including management) required. Advanced degree preferred.
