Description:

The Supervisor of Immunohistochemistry (IHC) supervises and coordinates the activities of the subordinate technologists, technicians, aides and assistants performing a variety of tests of a moderately or highly complex nature. In this capacity, s/he assures efficient, accurate and timely reporting of test results and examinations. The Supervisor of IHC also performs routine complex tests which involve delicate and exacting steps requiring measured judgment as to the appropriate procedures to be employed. Such testing may be performed by manual methods involving technical interpretation and by automated analyzers involving maintenance and troubleshooting. S/he may also assist with the instructing of laboratory personnel, and laboratory and medical students. This individual provides laboratory and administrative support for personnel and leadership including but not limited to: Consulting with the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Laboratory Director and Manager of Anatomic Pathology Labs on testing optimization.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • 65% Technical - Perform a wide variety of histological preparation procedures for surgical, autopsy and cytology purposes. Write and review technical procedures with detailed instructions covering specific methodology, set-up, and conduct of new or modified procedures. Supervise and train new employees and pathology residents in the maintenance and preparation of laboratory materials and equipment. Order and maintain laboratory supplies and reagent inventory. Develop, maintain, and review Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control in the laboratory (QC). Coordinate instrument comparisons and AMR studies. Coordinate CAP proficiency testing. Perform CLIA validation studies for new instruments, tests, procedures. Coordinate and participate in R&D projects, IHC validation, precision & sensitivity studies, etc. Work with administrative staff to prepare for inspections and surveys related to accreditation requirements, and assure regulatory body inspection readiness. Ensure continuous workflow of the laboratory by working closely with other supervisors by communicating verbally.
  • 30% Supervision - Directly supervise the Histology Laboratory technologists and technicians. Plan, assign, and adjust work assignments to achieve maximum efficiency without compromising the highest standards of accuracy of results and the timeliness of reporting. Advise and assist personnel in assigned areas as questions and problems arise, troubleshoot and problem solve in the laboratory as needed. Perform bench level testing as required. Monitor staff performance and work with the manager in preparing formal performance evaluations. Develop the performance goals and objectives for each staff member. Assist in employee recruitment and interview process. Conduct periodic staff meetings. Perform timecard adjustments for assigned staff. Review and assess competencies of the assigned staff. Coordinate training of personnel, complete training checklists and complete competency evaluation.
  • 5% Interact with physicians, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and/or in person, in a pleasant and helpful manner. Participate in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program. Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

1. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling six years (72 months), from the categories below:

A. College training with a major in biological sciences or closely related field

  • Associate Degree equals 2 years (24 months)
  • 90 semester hours equals 3 years (36 months)
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher (120 semester hours) equals 4 years (48 months)

B. Progressively responsible work experience in a clinical pathology facility which must include: hematology, urinalysis, fecal analysis, clinical chemistry, exfoliative cytology, anatomic pathology and any other ancillary procedure
