Duties and Responsibilities

1. *Responsible for participating in the work of the maintenance crew on the maintenance & repair of the infrared telescope facilities (IRTF) & all Observatory equipment (i.e. drive & control system, electronic equipment & optics, occasionally repair components), when necessary. Work entails supervision of subordinate technicians in varied crafts & skills.

2. *Plans, schedules, organizes, & directs crew in maintenance of the IRTF & Observatory equipment (i.e. hydraulic equipment, gearboxes, guide rollers, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, etc); performs daily maintenance check on mechanical, electronic & electromechanical systems & components.

3. *Under the direction of the observatory manager, creates, establishes, and enforces safety policies and protocols for observatory personnel, including daycrew, telescope operators, and night attendants.

4. Arranges for the delivery of water, fuel and liquid and gaseous cryogenics; schedules the loading and unloading of various equipment and supplies necessary for the maintenance of the IRTF facilities.

5. Makes and/or arranges instrument changes on telescopes; balances telescope to compensate for additional or less weight.

6. Makes special assignments to subordinate technical personnel and assist when necessary in the performance of their duties.

7. May act on behalf of Observatory Manager in their absence regarding supervision of all subordinate IRTF personnel.

8. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possession of a vocational degree in electronics technology, machinery/mechanical technology or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for electronic and electro mechanical repair; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of electronics and electromechanical repair as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with electronics and electromechanical work.

4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

8. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

9. Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, tools and equipment employed in the maintenance equipment utilized in or in support of observatory facilities and equipment.

10. Considerable knowledge of the operation of observatory or observatory support equipment.

11. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in observatory maintenance and repair work.

12. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of a number of skilled and semi-skilled subordinates.

13. Ability to understand and follow blueprints, sketches, oral, and written instructions.

14. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with visiting astronomers, contractors, employees, and the general public.

15. Must be able to work at an elevation of 14,000 feet.

16. Experience supervising mechanical, HVAC, electrical and electronic repair and maintenance of equipment utilized in or in support of observatory facilities and equipment.

17. Ability to travel independently to various locations in a timely manner. Fulfilled by possession of valid State of Hawaii Driver's license (class 3), valid comparable driver's license, or use of other means of transportation which meets positions needs.

18. Must be able to work a non-standard work schedule.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Experience with cryogenic systems.
