Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to one calendar year for part-time employees.****

This hiring is for up to five temporary positions to help with instructional support tasks associated with delivery of classes by the UH Manoa Department of Mechanical Engineering. Work each week may vary in time and effort as the term progresses.
Duties and Responsibilities 

  • * Primary duties may include preparing and supervising laboratory experiments, preparing instructional materials and demonstrations, instructing students in classroom and laboratory environments, leading recitation/review discussions, grading reports and/or homework, researching and collecting information for creation of new assignments, and holding office hours. Additionally, other duties may include any or all of the following:
  • * Check that equipment is in good working condition and report any malfunctions or issues to the supervisor. Help students set up and operate equipment safely and correctly. Assist students with manufacturing, testing, and other laboratory processes and answer their questions when necessary. Ensure that students are using materials and other resources appropriately and efficiently. Write, draft, and organize standard operating procedures and other manuals and documentation.
  • * Maintain a clean, tidy, and organized workspace by regularly cleaning workstations and equipment. Dispose of materials following proper disposal procedures. Ensure that tools and materials are properly labeled and stored. Keep track of supplies, and equipment, and inform supervisor(s), as delegated by the Department Chair, when supplies are running low or when maintenance is needed on equipment. Suggest items to be ordered and prepare lists for orders.
  • * Monitor the use of equipment in instructional spaces by Mechanical Engineering students. Encourage students to maintain accurate and organized records of their resource use. Help students with design, resource access, and safe equipment operation. Assist with data collection and ensure that data is properly documented.
  • * Provide supervision for undergraduate students working on course assignments. Mediate any conflicts or disagreements among students to maintain a productive and safe working environment.
  • * Ensure that everyone in the space is aware of and follows safety rules and protocols. Ensure that only authorized individuals have access to controlled spaces and that students have the necessary permissions to use specific equipment or areas.
  • * Maintain open and clear communication with the supervisors and fellow instructional assistants to address any issues or concerns. Stay updated on department and classroom protocols, safety regulations, and new equipment or techniques through training and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 
  • A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in mechanical engineering or related subjects.
  • Ability to listen to directions and work independently with general supervision.
  • Good interpersonal skills and interest to work with undergraduate students.
  • Possess strong organization and time management skills.
  • Have the manual dexterity to manipulate parts and benchtop apparatus (up to ten (10) pounds in weight).
