Our top rated organization is looking to add a full time Cytotechnologist to our Pathology & Lab Medicine team at UConn Health located in Farmington, CT. 

This class is accountable for providing diagnosis and information for treatment of disease by independently performing a full range of tests, procedures, experiments and analyses relevant to anatomic pathology in the field of cytology as well as assisting in other laboratory functions. This position will work in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UConn John Dempsey Hospital located in Farmington, CT.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade. 

SCHEDULE: Full time, 80 hours every two weeks, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday, weekends and holidays as assigned to accommodate departmental needs, 30 minute unpaid meal break. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:

Must possess excellent technical and theoretical ability in cytology

Must possess knowledge and experience in preparing, screening, evaluating and interpretation of GYN, Non-GYN and FNA specimens

Ability to work without direct supervision in a deliberate manner

Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with all levels of the laboratory staff, hospital professionals and personnel

Ability to plan and organize workloads including varied tasks

Demonstrates the ability to distinguish result of various test and to acknowledge the accuracy of those results

Considerable knowledge of laboratory instrumentation including computers

Knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures including safety practices

Knowledge of scientific methods

Ability to work quickly and accurately under stressful conditions

  EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

Certification as a Cytotechnologist by a American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certifying agency approved by Department of Human Health Services (HHS) and four (4) years current cytotechnology experience

 OR 

Graduate from an accredited program and certification as a Cytotechnologist or be eligible for and obtain certification within three (3) months of employment

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbents must maintain certification and registration by ASCP during employment 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Prepares reports of cytological findings by collecting, processing, analyzing, interpreting and summarizing information

Processes gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens including fine needle aspirations for evaluation per laboratory protocol/procedures

Screen, evaluate, interpret and issue the final diagnosis on gynecology cytology specimens that are within normal limits (includes retrieving previous specimens’ information on computer)

Screen, evaluate and make preliminary diagnoses on hi-risk rescreens, unsatisfactory and abnormal GYN cases and refer to pathologist for final diagnosis

Screen, evaluate and refer to pathologist for final diagnosis all non-gynecology and FNA specimens; (all cytology cases are screened, reviewed, evaluated and interpreted according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment 1988 (CLIA ’88) standards and requirements)

Assist clinicians in preparing and processing fine needle aspiration specimens

Maintains neat and accurate records of test results

Prepares reagents standards and controls as needed

Observes all hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area

Performs and documents quality control procedures and instrument preventive maintenance

Notifies supervisor and/or Director of significant and critical test results or abnormal findings in a timely manner

Performs duties according to schedule to maintain appropriate workflow and timely completion

Participates in the overall quality control program of the laboratory

Ensures compliance with all regulatory and UCHC standards

Assist with laboratory inventory

Provide medical information by answering questions and requests

Maintains professional and technical knowledge

Maintains patient confidence by keeping information confidential

Other related duties as assigned

  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Laboratory setting with frequent exposure to infectious disease agents, chemical toxins and potential carcinogens

Concentrated time sitting with use of the microscope and computer terminal

Work requires visual strain due to protracted, close examination of specimens using the microscope

Ability to lift objects weighing 25 pounds
