Facilities Management at CU Boulder encourages applications for 2 Fire Suppression Technicians! These positions complete inspection, testing, maintenance and installation of new and existing fire suppression systems.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Functional Testing, Code Competency, Documentation

Perform functional testing, inspections, and certifications of existing fire suppression systems including water flow and tamper switches, pre-action systems and components, dry pipe systems and components, air compressors, back flow systems and components, and other related systems and components as necessary.

Responsible for documenting all deficiencies, changes, and problems. Maintain fire alarm and fire suppression system records for all systems on campus including record drawings, testing results, valve inspections, building inceptions, back flow certification, maintenance and repair reports, and technical reference materials on a per building fire alarm / suppression system basis.

Inform relevant parties of functional systems failures or problems for securing future funding sources.

Repair and Maintenance, Code Compliance, Work Scheduling

Perform maintenance, installations and modifications on fire sprinkler systems to ensure the normal operation of the campus fire sprinkler systems.

Inform all relevant parties of the work schedule and of the status of the buildings' system.

Knowledge of Trade, Systems, Campus Standards & Protocols

Responsible for inspecting contractor installations of fire suppression systems, and coordinating system deactivation to allow for contractor work on existing systems and assisting in interconnection between existing and new suppression systems.

This also includes the fire alarm control panel deactivation and notification of proper parties for short-term outages, following a pre-agreed upon protocol.

Enforce contractual, UCB Standard requirements and work procedures and codes, and participate in and chip in to UCB’s acceptance decision for the final fire alarm and suppression system test on all new contractor installed systems.

Project Support, Inter-Departmental Collaboration

Work in conjunction with UCB Project Planners, Engineers, Consultants, and building occupants on projects, and participate in contract document and shop drawing reviews.

Aid in developing and editing UCB Standards and fire alarm and suppression procedures and policies.

Communication and Personal Growth

Maintain and improve knowledge of technical competency on fire suppression systems. Use this information as a key resource for instructing / informing campus entities, including faculty, staff and emergency response personnel on facilities component improvements and theory and operation of all fire suppression system devices.

Responsible for completing material issuance requests and purchase requests to procure material needed. When closing work orders, include closing comments and ensure any repair work orders are created.

As an essential services employee, the position is responsible to respond to other duties as assigned on an "as needed" basis.

The position will be required to drive a State vehicle and maintain a valid State of Colorado drivers license. Within all duties listed, work collaboratively with other Trades work units and train them on pertinent systems as necessary.

  • This in-person position has an anticipated schedule is 7 : 00 am - 3 : 30 pm Monday - Friday. The role may be required to work alternate or extended shifts at the discretion of the work unit supervisor.

The salary for this position is $71,000 - $73,500 annually.

What We Require

Three years of experience in fire sprinkler installation, testing, and maintenance as they pertain to fire suppression systems.

Appropriate education or completion of a formalized apprenticeship will substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Must be a Colorado resident to apply and have a valid Colorado driver's license.

What You Will Need

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent creative problem-solving skills and the ability to learn quickly.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience in an institutional setting and extensive knowledge of NFPA 13, 14, 15, 20, 25.
  • Solid understanding of wet, dry, and pre-action systems function and operation.
  • Basic knowledge of fire alarm systems wiring and systems operation as it relates to fire alarm system functions.
  • Current Backflow Protection Assembly Tester Certification (ASSE preferred). Applicant must attain certification within 12 months of hire if they do not currently possess it.
  • Five years of experience in fire sprinkler testing, installation, and maintenance.
  • Current City of Denver Installer / Inspector's License for fire / life safety systems.
