Department Provost Globus Professional Services About the Department Globus (www.globus.org) is a sustainable, non-profit business within the University of Chicago delivering solutions to the research community worldwide. Globus develops and provides critical services that support scientific research for governmental, academic, and commercial organizations in a wide range of disciplines including life sciences, physics, and astronomy. We develop and operate commercial-quality, cloud-based software application and platform services used by 10s of thousands of researchers to manage their large–and growing–data management challenges. We have offices located at 401 North Michigan Avenue in the heart of downtown Chicago and remote employees who work-from-home. Globus, together with Globus Labs, a research group within the University of Chicago, and part of the Data Science and Learning Division at Argonne National Labs, develop and deploy cutting edge technologies to solve new challenges facing the scientific community and enable break-through scientific discoveries. Job Summary As a Professional Services Developer, you will help researchers achieve their research goals by integrating Globus data and compute management services with research applications. Organizations that adopt Globus include universities, national laboratories, federal research agencies and commercial companies of all shapes and sizes. You will complete software development and integration assignments that support our team’s goals. You will develop relationship-building skills that enable you to provide exemplary customer service, explore and uncover the research IT needs of our customers, and understand how Globus services can best support their mission. Responsibilities Software Development - performs as a team member in research software projects developing data portals, science gateways, data commons, and other research applications. Performs code testing on components and works to ensure that appropriate implementation standards are met. Software Integration - assists research software engineers with utilizing Globus APIs, SDK, and web interfaces to add Globus data management features to their applications. Develops, tests, documents and deploys work with other research software engineers to optimize and troubleshoot Globus features in their applications. Support and Documentation - grows the body of available Globus knowledge by documenting best practices, developing code samples, and sharing learnings with both Globus staff and customers. Team Coordination - contributes to team coordination and development activities, including participating in project meetings and sprint reviews. Develops knowledge of current security and software development best practices. Investigates and resolves day-to-day technical problems using standard procedures. Performs code testing on components and works to ensure that appropriate implementation standards are met. Supports and maintains existing applications. Works with web developers and responds to requests from users. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field. Experience: Relevant programming experience developing, implementing, and debugging Python for personal or professional projects. Knowledge and skills developed through 0-2 years of work experience in research software. Background in a customer facing role. Familiarity with high performance computing. Research software development. Cloud computing. Scientific applications. Familiarity with Globus. Technical Skills or Knowledge: Familiarity with Python web framework (e.g. Flask/Django). Knowledge of SQL databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite). Knowledge of Web technologies (e.g. Javascript, HTML, CSS). Proficiency in software development with Python and/or Javascript. Unit testing and continuous integration tools (e.g. pytest, Jenkins, Github Actions). Knowledge of open source project contribution. Familiarity with Shell scripting (e.g., bash). Knowledge of Agile (e.g. Scrum) development processes. Use standard software development applications and tools. Preferred Competencies Effective oral and written communication skills. Interest in modern security and data management technologies. Exposure to fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of software development. Problem-solving skills. Prioritize and manage workload to meet critical project milestones and deadlines. Work in a collaborative team environment. Attention to detail.
