Department BSD ARC-SRF - Animal Resource Center & Office of Shared Research Facilities About the Department The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at The University of Chicago is responsible for the use and care of all research animals on campus. The ARC manages 6 facilities and a business office. Its sections are as follows: husbandry, facilities, operations, veterinary care, finance and administration. The unit merged with the Office of Shared Research Facilities (OSRF) managing all of the BSD cores on campus. animals on campus. Job Summary Responsible for managing and maintaining facilities to support the Animal Resources Center (ARC) and the Office of Shared Research Facilities (OSRF). Oversee, and coordinate facilities renovations, contractor activities, construction projects in conjunction with BSD project managers and other activities performed by hired outside vendors and service providers. Manage preventative maintenance activities between Facilities Services, Physical Plant and outside vendors. Operate and maintain ARC environmental monitoring and building automation systems. Plan, organize and implement short and long-term projects relevant to specialized equipment, infrastructure and facility maintenance within the Animal Resources Center (ARC) and the Office of Shared Research Facilities (OSRF). Supervise activities of the maintenance/technical support team; responsible for capital projects delivery process, development and implementation; coordinate oversight of routine facilities operational metrics (critical operational parameters and infrastructure assessments) within the ARC and core facilities. Responsibilities Responsible for all administrative duties for ARC/OSRF facilities, develop, organize and create reports and presentations as needed. Manage all data collection and information flow for the group and ensure senior management is informed and/or aware of activities with significant impact on the overall program. Manage maintenance team’s activities, set priorities and assign duties and responsibilities to ensure task completion, coordinate work activities with external groups, service providers and contractors. Create on call rotation and provide support. Monitor environmental conditions (lights, temperature and humidity) and verify proper operation of building systems and equipment. Responsible for proper environmental parameters and awareness of effects on research animals if ranges exceed expectations. Manages responses to environmental deficiencies, equipment malfunctions and maintenance work requests. Generate reports to support activities for all applicable federal, state, local and AAALAC requirements. Oversee the delivery process of projects from the design phase through close out/completion. Responsible for managing the construction and renovation of physical assets and bringing assets online in the most efficient and effective manner. Request and assess quotes from vendors and coordinate the bidding and selection process of outside contractors and development of budgets with the finance group. Make decisions guided by SOPs, policies, procedures and business plan; works closely with the business and finance teams to develop and/or plan various repairs, upgrades and renovation projects. Follow construction standards, ensures quality, timeliness, compatibility and sustainability plans. Coordinate schedules and provide status updates and report on active projects, project completion, review documentation and proposals, develop SOPs and other relevant documents. Develops facilities maintenance policies and procedures. Plans renovation and other facilities-related projects, including ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Receives requests for facilities services and supervises delivery of appropriate services. Supervises inspections of buildings, equipment and/or surrounding grounds for deficiencies and potential safety, health, or code problems. Reviews and authorizes written reports summarizing findings and recommends solutions. Supervises movement of equipment and materials, maintains building security, and maintains information on building blue prints, space utilization data and equipment. Coordinates with staff from other units and supervises the work of contractors as well as facilities union and/or non-union staff. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: Experience with project management, preferably with physical plant/engineering and/or architectural environments. 3-5 years of experience in an academic environment, preferably within a research setting. 1-3 years of experience with supervision of technical staff. Prior experience with building systems (i.e. building automation systems). Preferred Competencies Advanced computer knowledge and skills. Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills. Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal/communication skills. Willingness to work successfully as a member of a team, ability to communicate effectively with faculty, graduate students and various administrative offices at all levels of the University, ability to prioritize. Strong decision-making skills and ability to work under pressure of frequent deadlines. Ability to work on more than one project at one time and meet deadlines. Capacity to handle multiple tasks in a short amount of time. Must be detailed and organized. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Working Conditions Requires a fair amount of walking between facilities, also entails working at a computer in an office environment. Able to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
