Position overview
Position title: Sharma Lab Project Scientist (Assistant Project Scientist)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project Scientist Series Fiscal Year. "Off-scale salaries", i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $71,500-82,900.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as October 1, 2023, but no later than November 15, 2023.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two (2) years, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description
Assistant Professor Upasna Sharma in the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a project scientist. The scientist will contribute to a research program focused on studying the role of tRNA fragments in epigenetic inheritance (https://sharmalab.sites.ucsc.edu/). The Sharma lab uses a unique and powerful combination of genomics, assisted reproduction, and mouse genetics to study the biogenesis and functions of tRNA fragments.
Duties will include leading the execution of analysis and interpretation of RNA-sequencing data, with a special emphasis on evolution, fragmentation, expression, and modification of tRNAs. The scientist will be expected to collaborate on multiple ongoing projects in the lab and assist with the development of manuscripts related to their projects. Candidates should be self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills.
Applicants with at least five years of experience in analysis of eukaryotic genomes and RNA sequencing data and/or experience in analysis of tRNA sequencing data are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Ph.D. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in bioinformatics, bioengineering or a related field.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience with programming for genomic data analysis and tool development for analysis.
