The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a unit with the Division of Academic Affairs. The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden's rich and diverse collection contains representatives of more than 300 plant families of Mediterranean climates. The garden maintains collections of rare and threatened plants of unusual scientific interest. Particular specialties are world conifers, primitive angiosperms, and bulb-forming plant families. Large assemblages of plants from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and California natives are displayed on the grounds. Many of the species in these collections are not otherwise available for study in American botanical gardens and arboreta.

JOB SUMMARY
The Native Plant Program Student Coordinator performs a range of horticultural functions in support of the Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Responsibilities include coordinating student workers and volunteers in the care and maintenance of selected garden and nursery areas; assessing and managing resources (e.g., garden tools and equipment, time, and student employees); conservation of plant collection. This position is responsible for the daily care of collections including nursery watering and irrigation schedules in the California section and selected nurseries. This position will occasionally support wider Arboretum initiatives and horticultural projects.
This position supervises student employees and provides direction to volunteers.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $24.66 - $25.68/Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES
80% - Student & Volunteer Coordination
  • Working with crews, coordinate and oversee student employees and volunteers in all aspects of their work in native plant gardens, nursery areas and native plant projects including seed processing and other assignments.
  • Organize students and volunteers in all aspects of collections maintenance and management, working collaboratively with other to ensure excellence in all activities.
  • Ultimately responsible to ensure that the water is off at the end of the shift, which will include oversight of student workers involved in irrigation and nursery watering (including occasional weekends).
  • Contribute to the team effort of arboretum upkeep including planting, pruning, weeding, watering, fertilizing, path maintenance, control of invasive plant species, debris removal, and other activities involved in cultivating plants.
  • Work closely with the Native Plant Program Staff to ensure the long-term sustainability of the collections.
20% - Collections Maintenance and Management
  • Must be able to identify plants in order to maintain and cultivate an environment suitable to sustain and support the California Gardens;
  • Maintain public garden areas to be safe and display the collections to their best.
  • Manage plants for health, structure, scale, and display quality. Control unwanted plant migration. Identify and help prevent risks to visitor and staff safety.
  • Understand and support the scope and focus of the collections and the separate gardens and garden areas.
  • Water collections to ensure the viability of collections and gardens, at a minimum, and in keeping with water restrictions and best irrigation practices.
  • Perform all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance tasks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates (AA) degree or higher in Horticulture, Botany, or related field and/or a combination of education and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of botanical and horticultural concepts and practices, especially for drought-tolerant plants.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support people from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, including those from currently marginalized and historically under-represented groups.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and power equipment, including mowers, saws, and weed whackers. Experience in training others in using these tools.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Ability to provide a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Organizational ability to prioritize assignments, meet deadlines, adapt to changing circumstances and achieve established goals.
  • Good oral communication skills to communicate respectfully with a wide range of constituents.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and machinery sufficient to learn the software to create signage, use the plant database, share documents and drives, and correspond with the campus and external communities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to equity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Experience as a horticulturist.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
  • Poison Oak is present. Incumbent must be willing to take the measures required to work in contact with and cut/remove poison oak.
  • Ability to do occasional work in confined spaces such as attics and trenches while bending, stooping and/or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live electrical circuits and machinery.
  • Ability to successfully work with and around a variety of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.
  • Ability to perform vertebrate pest control such as trapping, baiting, or other types of rodent control.
  • Ability to perform grounds keeping duties outdoors through all seasons of weather in developed and undeveloped environments.
  • The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
  • Ability to wear a respirator in accordance with the California Code of Regulations Title 8, 5144.
  • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
