NOTIFICATIONS

UCSC Extension provides professional training that reflects the academic rigor of the University of California and the hands-on, roll-up-your-shirtsleeves practicality of Silicon Valley culture. Developed with guidance from key industry leaders and academic experts, our certificate programs match the economic demand of your industry, from engineering to business, education to bioscience. The University of California reviews and approves UCSC Extension courses and programs for academic content, merit and instructor qualifications. Many of our courses may be applied toward degree programs or may be eligible for professional certificates and licenses.
The IT department is a fast-paced environment and serves all IT needs for UCSC Silicon Valley Extension and UC Scout. Learners, instructors and staff members are supported by the IT department, totaling approximately 18,000 registered users at any time. The LMS Team supports a multitude of IT needs within a clearly-defined service level.

JOB SUMMARY
Applies IT professional concepts, department, unit and campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of moderately complex issues in one or more IT areas of specialization. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Works closely with other IT members as an integral part of the team, and independently when needed.
Has both internal (eg: instructional designers, etc.) and external (eg: students, etc.) clients. This position requires an interdisciplinary approach involving many areas of information and instructional technologies and user experiences. Participates in the support of the application. Technical professional with knowledge in the overall fields of software applications, enterprise solutions and instructional technology. Problem solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. Assists instructors in addressing educational needs, translating their pedagogical goals into technical processes, and developing appropriate solutions in support of those goals. Receives general instructions, with detailed instructions being provided by supervisor and/or vendor on complex new project assignments and initiatives.

JOB DUTIES
50% - Supporting People
Technical Support and IT Request Handling
  • Provides support and engages in complex problem solving.
  • Monitors and responds to email requests in the Extension Online, the UC Scout Classroom mailboxes and the IT Ticketing Systems.
  • Adds to knowledge base and FAQs used by Extension and UC Scout.
Instructional Technology Support
  • Provides support to instructors and teachers in addressing educational needs, translating their pedagogical goals into technical processes, and developing appropriate solutions in support of those academic goals.
  • Supports LMS solutions including developing instructional solutions with Program Managers, Instructional Designers, instructors, and teachers with troubleshooting, and testing and implementing integrations.
  • Creates and administers conferencing technology accounts for instructors and teachers.
  • Ensures best practices are always followed.
25% - Supporting Technology
Interactive, Media, and Web Solutions Support
  • Provides technical solutions and development of media components; applies industry practices, community standards and campus and departmental policies.
  • Assists in negotiating project plans with stakeholders.
  • Trains users and assists instructors on using interactive, media and web solutions to address educational needs.
  • Ensures best practices are always followed.
Accessible Technology Support
  • Provides technical support for course-focused accessibility.
  • Collaborates with the Registrar's office, Accessibility Tech Committee Members, IT Team members, Program Managers and Instructional Designers to gather requirements and provide adequate solutions.
10% - Training and Documentation
  • Develops in-person and online training, writes targeted documentation for specific audiences, use cases, self-service and solutions in support of instructional tools and techniques.
  • Ensures that service and instructional materials are accessible and in compliance with law and policy. Routinely updates and adds to existing knowledge base.
5% - Special Projects / New Initiatives / Research
  • Stays abreast of the developments in Learning Management Technologies. Recommends upgrades and new tools based on current trends in the education industry.
  • Applies knowledge of project management and service management standards
  • Serves as project lead or team member within the department, beginning with the project proposal phase through completion, planning, testing, migrations, documentation, production and customer support.
  • Participates and/or leads simple to moderately complex projects.
Often requires analysis of Instructional requirements of the instructors and teachers by applying UC standards and sound pedagogical methodology
5% - Vendor Relations
  • Maintains relations with vendors for the Learning Management tools and integrations.
  • Stays abreast of new developments with their respective solutions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

  • Experience with administration of Learning Management Systems and other educational systems such as Student Information Systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent / related functions
  • Possess general knowledge of how different systems talk with each other, how they have effects on user permissions/roles and how they impact other functionalities in interdependent systems
  • Possess general knowledge or experience supporting issues related to standard OSs (Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS) and to various web browsers. Basic understanding of API, LTI, and importance of DNS
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Project Management skills
  • Ability to lead and/or participate in projects that vary from simple to moderately complex
  • Familiarity with accessibility technologies, particularly when used in instructional contexts
  • Ability to create content using rich media production methods
