Position overview
Position title: Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) Faculty Director
Salary range: Compensation is based on the underlying faculty appointment, plus one month of summer salary and a stipend in the amount of $10,050 (paid out over 12 months). In addition, the faculty director will normally receive two course releases per year (three courses for a teaching professor).
Percent time: 50% time commitment
Anticipated start: The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.
Position duration: The initial appointment is for three years, including responsibilities over the summer, with the possibility of re-appointment contingent on performance.

Position Description
The University of California, Santa Cruz seeks a dynamic Senate faculty leader to guide its Teaching Center, currently being rebranded as the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), a merging of the Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL) and Online Education. This three-year renewable appointment provides academic leadership for an accomplished team of staff and academics previously from CITL and Online Education.
The TLC works in conjunction with the Committee on Teaching and other units on campus to advance the educational mission of UC Santa Cruz by improving student learning and closing equity gaps. It supports this mission by generating and providing access to research-based resources and support for teaching excellence and equity-minded pedagogical innovation to all current and future instructors, including Senate faculty, lecturers, postdocs , and graduate teaching assistants and instructors. The TLC (1) develops, curates, and maintains readily accessible resources dedicated to high-impact practices and excellence in teaching, (2) assists instructors in designing and redesigning courses to support equity and improve student learning, (3) develops and leads initiatives that foster the growth of a culture of assessment that improves student learning, (4) assists faculty in integrating educational technologies into their pedagogy, (5) guides faculty in exploring historical outcomes data in courses and programs or upcoming course demographics to identify course structure, pedagogical approaches, and practices that elevate achievement of all students and foster significant learning, (6) supports new faculty and TAs by providing resources, workshops, professional development, networking opportunities, and general teaching assistance and consultation, (7) creates opportunities to develop communities of practice dedicated to excellence in teaching through peer-to-peer interactions, facilitating communities of practice, and organizing workshops and other events, (8) supports faculty in documenting their teaching, reflecting on their practice, and utilizing Student Experience of Teaching (SET) and other survey data as formative feedback, and (9) works to transform the culture of teaching on the campus. Development is an important component of this position, cultivating support for the TLCs mission through pursuit of grants and fundraising.
The faculty director will be the academic lead for the TLC, reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and working with the Committee on Teaching. The faculty director will work closely with the Managing Director and the Director of Digital Learning and Engagement. The TLC Faculty Director supervises other academics in the center, such as the Assistant Faculty Director and the Associate Director for Teaching, and provides mentorship for the faculty associates. As a representative of the vice provost and of the central administration, the faculty director is expected to model the UCSC Principles of Community in their interactions with faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.
Appointees to a faculty administrator title: Must not have been found in violation of the UC and/or UCSC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment policies within the last 10 years; and Must not have been disciplined for violating the Faculty Code of Conduct (APM 015) within the last 10 years (discipline includes a negotiated settlement agreement to resolve the matter).
DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Working collaboratively with the TLC Directors to develop and maintain a vision for the TLC grounded in current educational research.
  • Serving as a liaison between the TLC, other units on campus, the administration, and external audiences.
  • Promoting campus policies that support and reward high quality, equity-minded instruction.
  • Leading the TLC in the implementation of strategic goals related to institutional priorities.
  • Ensuring evaluation and assessment of TLC programs and services.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with area, state, and national teaching center directors to share resources and best practices.
  • Providing leadership and representing the Santa Cruz campus in the UC consortium of Centers for Teaching and Learning.
  • Cultivating support for the scholarship of teaching and learning assessment through pursuit of grants and fundraising.
  • Consulting with faculty on documenting teaching effectiveness.
  • Facilitating workshops and the Faculty Fellows program.
  • Works with department chairs and deans to change practices at the departmental and divisional levels.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Applicants must be members of the UCSC Academic Senate (including emeriti* faculty).
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning leadership.
Preferred qualifications
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse campus constituents (faculty, students, researchers, administrators).
  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Knowledge of effective pedagogies and best practices in higher-education teaching and mentoring.
  • Knowledge of equity-minded practices in higher-education teaching and mentoring.
  • Administrative/management experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience in team building, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in grant writing, development, and/or fundraising.
  • Experience in developing and implementing operational goals.
