Position overview
Position title: Institute of Marine Sciences Postdoctoral Scientist (Paytan)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience with a starting annual salary of $67,250. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. Percent time: Full-time

Position duration: MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment for up to two years. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.

Position Description
The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral scientist with a focus on ecosystem modeling of coastal wetland restoration and nature based decarbonization. The postdoctoral scientist will work under the joint direction of Drs. Adina Paytan at UCSC and Yu Zhang at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and co-mentored by Drs. David Moulton, Qinjun Kang, and Marie Kroeger at LANL.
The postdoctoral scientist will use established models, such as the Advanced Terrestrial Simulator (ATS), and include wetland process representations and parameterizations. After model benchmarking, the candidate will use the models to investigate how different coastal wetland restoration options and climate change will affect wetland hydrology and carbon balance.
The position will be based at the LANL in Los Alamos, New Mexico and the incumbent will work closely with other LANL and UCSC researchers.
Applicants with experience or expertise in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Experience in mechanistic modeling of coastal ecosystem processes (encompassing hydrology, geochemistry, water and carbon cycling, and vegetation dynamics).
  • Experience with processes related to hydrological cycle, nutrient transport, or reactive transport in wetlands.
  • Strong mathematical and numerical modeling skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in peer reviewed literature.
  • Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science, with the willingness and ability to work independently when required.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in earth science, climate science, ocean science, civil and environmental engineering, coastal engineering, ecology, or a related field. It is expected the degree will be completed at time of application, but no later than June 30, 2022.
  • Research experience in numerical modeling methods and in the science of land surface processes.
