The Arts Division (arts.ucsc.edu) offers both creative and critical studies of art and culture at the undergraduate and graduate level. We build our students' capacity for creative and critical thinking. Instruction in the arts inspires and develops the skills needed for individual and collaborative creative thought, analysis, and action within and beyond the university. Our faculty consists of artists, performers, historians, critics, makers, and theorists working across the arts in a global context and addressing some of the most pressing issues of our day.
Undergraduate education in the arts includes Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs in art and design: games and playable media; film and digital media; history of art and visual culture; music; art; and theater arts; as well as a Bachelor of Music (B.M.). There are also concentrations offered in: film and digital media (critical studies, production, and integrated critical practice); history of art and visual culture (curation, heritage, and museums); and music (western art music and global music). Minors are offered in film and digital media, history of art and visual culture, electronic music, jazz music, theater arts, and dance.
Established graduate programs include the interdisciplinary digital arts and new media Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) program, the social documentation Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), the music Master of Arts (M.A.), and the theater arts Master of Arts (M.A.), as well as the recently launched environmental art and social practice Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.). Doctoral programs include the music composition Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.), and Ph.D. programs in music, visual studies, and film and digital media.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Dean of Arts, Assistant Deans serve as principal staff officers for academic and administrative affairs, advising the Dean, acting in the Dean's absence, and providing both on- and off-campus liaison services. As the Arts Dean's direct management team, Assistant and Associate Deans share responsibility for strategic and academic planning, development, and liaison duties. In addition, each has primary responsibility for specific areas of divisional operations and programs while retaining familiarity with all areas of administration.
The Assistant Dean for Student Success and Chief of Staff oversees the management of the Division's student-facing side of our academic programs including undergraduate and graduate student excellence, engagement and inclusion. Divisional student success programs under the purview of this position include: Arts Professional Pathways, the Arts Dean's Fund for Equity and Excellence, University of the Future Now, internship Scholarships, Arts Dean's Student Leadership Board, ArtsBridge and the like. This position also manages divisional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and student success grants and collaborates with the campus on minority-serving-institution (HSI, AANAPISI, etc.) and similar funding programs.
The position further requires expertise in the area of student success such as the ability to engage the literature on student achievement, excellence, engagement and inclusion; generates and analyzes student success metrics utilizing our campus data systems; proposes programs, interventions and solutions working in conjunction with our departments and campus wide units and committees; and manages the achievement of student success goals and reporting on student success programs. The Assistant Dean of Student Success and Chief of Staff also manages programmatic budgets as well as the supervision, direction, and oversight of associated programs, including arts events.
The Assistant Dean for Student Success and Chief of Staff is the Dean's chief confidential administrative advisor, providing the highest level of staffing support to the Dean, ensuring that they are fully briefed on current and emerging issues of importance within the Division of the Arts and the campus. This requires extensive collaboration with other members of the Dean's Senior Staff as well as faculty, staff and students as appropriate, throughout the division and beyond it, such as with the offices of Human Resources, Equity and Equal Protection, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Campus Counsel, and the University Ombudsperson. This position provides comprehensive and confidential advice to the Dean on a broad range of academic and administrative issues while exercising judgment and independent initiative in bringing information or problems related to a wide range of issues, projects, programs and other matters relating to the internal and external affairs of the division to the attention of the Dean. Participates with the Dean and other senior staff on divisional strategic planning and associated budgeting. Provides day-to-day and long-range assistance to the Dean on a wide range of assignments both internal and external to the division and the campus, and represents the Dean and the division to various internal and external constituents.
The Arts Division is actively committed to DEI and to implementing programs to support an inclusive climate for students, faculty, and staff. This position requires an understanding of the barriers facing traditionally underrepresented and historically excluded groups in higher education as well as a commitment to contributing to DEI in the division and on campus.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary:$142,100 - $170,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
25% - Student Success: Strategic Planning for Excellence, Engagement, & Inclusion
  • In collaboration with the Associate Deans for faculty, research, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), department chairs, program heads, managers and advisors (including the Lead Advisor), the Assistant Dean overseeing academic programs, finances and facilities, develops and implements the Division's vision and strategic plan for student excellence, engagement, and inclusion at all levels (general education, lower-division undergraduate, upper-division undergraduate, and graduate).
  • Stays well informed about trends in higher education regarding DEI and student excellence and engagement.
  • Acts as policy/procedural expert and liaison, engaging with campus units and committees focused on student success and DEI including the offices of Student Affairs and Success, Equity and Equal Protection, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as (Undergraduate Education, Educational Opportunity Programs, HSI and AANAPISI Initiatives, Disability Resource Center (DRC), Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL), and the Senate.
  • Provides policy and procedural guidance for the Associate Deans for DEI, research, and faculty affairs, as needed, on student success.
  • Manages annual DEI and Mentorship action plans of each department with the Associate Deans of DEI and Faculty Affairs, and ensures publication on our website, strategic planning, oversight, and guidance.
  • High level strategic planning, direction and oversight of divisional programs in support of student success.
    • Directs the Arts Division's professional development programs, including the Arts Professional Pathways program, and oversees the work of the Coordinator, including strategic planning, support, advocacy, and philanthropy / grant seeking in coordination with our advancement and research development teams.
    • Directs and supervises the Arts Dean's funding programs, including the Arts Dean's Fund for Equity and Excellence, University of the Future Now, and Internships Scholarships.
    • Provides divisional oversight of the Arts Bridge program, working in collaboration with the Faculty Director.
    • Dotted-line supervision of the Division's Lead Advisor.
    • In conjunction with the Lead Advisor, indirect support for the undergraduate and graduate advising teams in departments and programs including strategic planning, support, and advocacy for advising and mentoring programs for students.
    • Direct supervision of the Arts Dean's Student Leadership Board and oversight of the program.
25% - Student Success: Curricular Interventions & Student Support
  • In consultation with the Assistant Dean with purview over academic programs, oversee assessment and analysis of instruction and the curriculum in relationship to student success. Assists academic programs in the implementation of innovations.
    • Conducts and supervises research on student success interventions. Creates reports and analytics and makes recommendations for changes. Suggests and assists with implementation of curricular innovations to improve student outcomes.
    • Supports faculty in the development of new academic programs and revisions to existing programs to improve student success.
    • As needed, and with assistance as appropriate from the Assistant Dean over academic programs, supports faculty and staff who are writing grants and working to improve student success.
    • Advocates at the campus level for resources needed to support student success in academic programs via supplemental instruction support and coordination and other approaches.
  • Oversees student-focused outreach and professional development at the division level.
    • Provides support for student organizations in the division, including departmental groups.
    • Advocates for and develops non-academic professional development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Develops outreach and retention programs for underserved populations.
  • Oversees divisional DRC issues in coordination with the departments and central offices, as needed.
  • Ensures divisional representation on campus-level committees related to student success.
  • Works with the lead advisor to create and maintain a student success and student support website.
  • Advocates at the campus level for resources needed for student success and diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Assesses needs for and identifies resources for student success and opportunities. As needed, and with assistance from the assistant dean over academic programs, support departments who are writing student success and DEI improvement grants.
  • Manages strategic plan, oversight and guidance for funding applications for AANAPISI, HSI and other opportunities for improving student success, working in consultation with the Associate Dean of research and associated staff.
  • Conducts and supervises research on student success innovations to achieve greater efficiency or meet evolving disciplinary and cultural needs. Creates reports, presentations and measurements and makes recommendations for changes. Suggests and assists with implementation of student success innovations to improve efficiency and disciplinary needs, while retaining or improving DEI efforts.
30% - Chief of Staff and Dean's Office Management
  • The Chief of Staff is responsible for all administrative functions within the Dean's office including executive support for the Dean, and addresses all action items requiring attention directly or through the Dean's office staff. The Chief of Staff provides leadership, and direction for all staff in the Dean's office, ensuring that the office functions at the highest level, with tact, diplomacy, courtesy and efficiency. Organizes regular meetings with the Dean/Dean's senior staff. Along with them, represents the Dean and the division on campus-wide committees.
  • The position entails significant independent decision-making on highly complex administrative and policy-level issues. In all matters, anticipates needs or problems, and proactively addresses them. Serves as liaison with other divisions and units on the campus and in the UC system, as appropriate, on administrative and organizational issues. Keeps abreast of current and emerging issues within the division and on campus to ensure the Dean is informed as appropriate.
    • Exercises judgment and independent initiative in bringing problems and issues to the attention of the Dean. Provides direction on behalf of the Dean, prioritizes issues needing the attention of the Dean and coordinates with the Dean's office activities. May represent the Dean at meetings having divisional or campus-wide impact.
    • Serves as the dean's chief divisional lead on confidential and sensitive Staff HR issues.
    • Provides direct supervision and oversight of the dean's office staff (i.e., the dean's executive assistant and the dean's office assistant). Directly and via management of the executive assistant and dean's office assistant, oversees and manages support for the dean, primarily related to daily schedule, e.g., meeting preparation, calendar management, access/gatekeeper, email monitoring, and logistics.
    • Directly or via dean's office and events office staff, oversees and/or manages the dean's office activities and the tracking of related projects in direct support of the dean including the annual dean's office and chairs' retreat and other events planned by the dean's office staff (quarterly town halls, Fall Convocation, Winter Retreat, Spring Celebration, Dean's welcome to new and second year faculty, monthly staff parties, Sesnon Salons, Arts Dean's Lecture Series, etc.).
    • Directly or via dean's office staff, develops tools and processes to maximize efficiency of the dean's office (file management, project management, operations calendars, internal file sharing, and communications); provides training and support; audits and tracks the progress of dean's office tasks and deadlines. Oversees document management and retention.
    • Plans, oversees, and coordinates the data and visualizations for leadership meetings with chairs and managers, DEI and student success committee meetings, academic leadership meetings, and other presentations the dean must make.
    • Direct supervision and oversight of Fall Convocation, Winter Retreat and Spring Celebration including speakers, programming, and awards.
10% - Communications
  • Works with Dean and Associate Director of Communications to develop and implement both internal and external communication strategies. Keeps both faculty and staff abreast of key initiatives within the Dean's office. Works with the divisional development teams (philanthropy and research development) to ensure broad campus communication regarding programming and events within the Arts.
  • Drafts and edits correspondence for the Dean and establishes processes to route and distribute the Dean's correspondence.
    • With support and advice from the Associate Director of Communications, manages internal/campus communications for the dean's office (i.e., , divisional goals, Dean's annual self-assessment, highly confidential or other critical communications. At least initially, this will include oversight of the division's websites (in collaboration with the Associate Director of Communications).
    • In conjunction with the Dean and Associate Director of Communications, helps to develop the external communications for the division.
10% - Events Management and Other Duties as Assigned
  • With general direction from the Dean, manages events to meet the Dean's objectives and special projects and initiatives launched by the Dean; provides assistance with divisional planning activities and issue-oriented groups.
  • Supervises the Arts Events Office.
  • Direct supervision of monthly Sesnon Salons.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training
  • An understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education with experience and background sufficient to conceptualize, communicate, and implement the mission and goals of the Arts Division.
  • Excellent analytical, planning, management and organizational skills, and related experience to creatively address instructional, research, and administrative issues, to effectively define and implement strategic plans and goals, and to complete critical projects and tasks in a timely manner. Extensive experience using problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and skills to manage and motivate a diverse administrative, professional, and technical staff, fostering teamwork and formulating and instituting reporting structures and processes to achieve maximum functionality and efficiency. Flexibility and skill in leading staff and other teams successfully through organizational change and crisis.
  • Strong negotiating, mediation, and decision-making skills and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex academic and administrative issues clearly both verbally and in writing, to understand the concerns of various groups, to use information gathered through appropriate consultation in proposing solutions, and to represent and communicate the mission and work of the Arts Division to campus and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by an ability to interact effectively with faculty, students, staff, and the general public, and an ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with these individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, prepare and make presentations on institutional and administrative issues to varied audiences, large and small.
  • Academic background and experience in student success research, including data analysis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Terminal degree in a related field (PhD, JD, etc.)
  • Strong organizational skills to provide oversight of event planning.
