Departmental Overview

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Santa Barbara was founded in 1964. Our world-class faculty offers accredited programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). The outstanding educational and research opportunities in our department are further enhanced by the many interdisciplinary activities that abound at UCSB.

Brief Summary of Duties

Responsible for the continuing operation, maintenance, and improvements to the Mechanical Engineering Department's undergraduate labs in thermo sciences, fluid mechanics, materials science, and dynamics and control systems. Incumbent will be the lead of the Department's undergraduate lab support team. Responsible for ensuring that all of the experimental apparatus is working, that the teaching assistants are trained and that the labs maintain a high level of scientific professionalism. Also maintains the student design lab where students in the junior and senior design courses assemble and test their projects. Provides support, maintenance and training of the Department's prototyping tools.

Engineer in this position will play a key role in the development of new apparatus for the undergraduate laboratories and classroom demonstrations. The Department is continually improving the instructional labs and this engineer is responsible for ensuring the facility's goals are met in undergraduate laboratory courses.

Provides professional engineering support for other departmental activities, including faculty research.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering by 6/30/2024 or equivalent experience and/or training.
  • 1-3 years experience in 3D solid modeling and drawing standards (Solidworks preferred).
  • Experience machining in a student or professional shop environment.
  • Working knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using CNC machinery.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical systems.
  • Internship with experience or strong interest in basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Experience in operating and programming precision motions systems and/or precision measurement tools.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes and knowledge of prototyping tools (3D printers, laser cutters, etc.)
  • Experience with mechatronics (Arduino or other microcontrollers).

Responsibilities:

Instructional Lab Manager 60%

Responsible for the continuing operation, maintenance, and improvements to the Mechanical Engineering Department's undergraduate labs in thermo science, fluid mechanics, materials science, and dynamics and control systems. Incumbent will be the lead of the Department's undergraduate lab support team; including ME 6, ME 104, ME 105, ME 125EH, ME 125ED and ME 179L. Trains teaching assistants on lab safety, lab protocol and lab equipment for lab courses. Maintains a safe, effective teaching environment in departmental lab facilities. Responsible for room 2226, the Department's Design Lab. Responsible for room 2218 in support of the required undergraduate lab courses.Installs, configures and maintains computer data acquisition software and hardware used in the labs; prepares and repairs experiments for the labs; prepares all documentation relating to the operation and maintenance of the experiments. Provides professional support and maintains equipment inventory for student design projects; including ME 153 and ME 189. Maintains instructional experiments and classroom demonstrations. Provides and maintains up-to-date documentation on the experimental setups and classroom demonstrations used in department classes. Acts as liaison with campus Facilities Management for necessary lab physical improvements.

Technical Support 15%

Advises ME 189 Capstone senior projects teams on good engineering practice, manufacturing methods and safe work practices. Advises ME 197 Independent Study student projects.

Prototyping Support 15%

Provides support, maintenance and training for departmental prototyping tools, including 3D printers, laser cutters, PCB mills and other equipment necessary for student project construction.

Miscellaneous 10%

Other duties as needed, including bi-annual department inventory, tours of departmental facilities to visitors and prospective students, moving, cleaning, and organizational chores. Designs and develops classroom demonstrations. Provides professional engineering support for other departmental activities, including faculty research. Supervises part-time student help.
