Summary of Duties:

Serves as a visionary and operational leader for desktop engineering services. Spearheads the conceptualization, planning, and delivery of secure, automated, virtualized, and progressively cloud-oriented solutions for End User Computing services. This role demands a profound grasp of knowledge and the proficiency to orchestrate the strategic blueprinting and pragmatic execution of diverse End User Computing technologies. These technologies underpin campus-wide technical services within the Information Technology Services (ITS) division at UCSB. Integral to this position is the leadership responsibility of a team of skilled engineers. This team is entrusted with the creation, refinement, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of our comprehensive end-user computing solutions. These encompass a wide array of devices such as desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and correlated infrastructure. Reporting to the Director of Workplace Technology Services (WTS), assumes responsibility for the oversight of the End-User Computing Engineering personnel. This encompasses resource allocation, task coordination, performance assessment, timetable management, conflict mediation, and serving as the team's advocate in discussions spanning unit-level, departmental, divisional, and campus-wide undertakings. Formulates and articulates developmental life cycles. This role extends to orchestrating the deployment of campus-wide solutions that facilitate the integration of end-user components with applications, identity frameworks, and cloud-based services. The ultimate objective is to consolidate these elements into a singular, cohesive end-user computing product. As Manager of End User Computing Engineering, assumes a pivotal role in spearheading strategic initiatives and overseeing operations within diverse technical domains across the campus. This leadership role encompasses a wide spectrum of specialized fields and technologies, including but not limited to AWS Cloud and Azure Active Directory integration, Workstation and Business Technical Support, IT Infrastructure Systems Administration, IT Security protocols, Network Operations Center functionalities, Enterprise Architecture alignment, Cloud Services orchestration, Application Support frameworks, and IT Project Management. Within this expansive scope, orchestrates the alignment of these critical facets, ensuring seamless collaboration and synchronization across various technical arenas to reconcile these distinct areas into a cohesive and efficient end-user computing ecosystem. As Manager for the End User Computing Engineering team, assumes a critical position in shaping the endpoint user experience. Responsibilities encompass the strategic design of this experience, as well as the meticulous administration and support of technologies integrated into the cohesive end user environment. Includes involvement in stewardship over a multitude of enterprise-scale applications that serve the entire campus community. Plays an instrumental role in the conception, development, and implementation of enterprise application services, which encompass a comprehensive range of functionalities including Desktop and Application Management, Imaging, Security enhancements, seamless Cloud Integration, as well as robust Virtualization and Deployment mechanisms. Through these strategic efforts, contributes significantly to the optimization of the campus-wide technological landscape. Develops and pursues new technologies and learning opportunities that result in tangible movement in the direction of the strategic goals of the team and of management. Certification in multiple technologies or disciplines is expected and desirable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 7-9 years of experience - Master proficiency in conceptualizing, planning, and designing complete and integrated End User Computing solutions to achieve organizational goals and initiatives.
  • 4-6 years of experience - Project Management - Manages change and leads successful technology implementation and transformation projects.
  • 4-6 years of experience - Capable of developing and executing through a team a clear vision for the future of the unit and be able to develop strategies that align with that vision.
  • 4-6 years of experience - Excellent change management skill set, including the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and adjust course as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • End User Computing Architecture - Proficiency in conceptualizing, planning, and designing complete and integrated End User Computing solutions to achieve organizational goals and initiatives.
  • Client Management Technology (CMT) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) management tools - Designs a Unified Endpoint Management strategy and toolset that uses, among others, Microsoft Configuration Manager, InTune (or other MDM solution), JAMF, AD and Azure AD, GPO's or other like tools to enable remote management of a large, dispersed environment of End User Computing systems and endpoints.
  • Experience with cloud solutions - In a "cloud first, mobile first" world, collaborates in the adoption of virtual solutions, e.g. DaaS, Azure, AWS, GCP, to meet customer needs.
  • Ability to manage, design and develop strategies for automation based on procedural languages, e.g. Python, Pearl, Shell Scripting.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

End User Computing Enterprise Systems Architecture Management 45% Unified Desktop Application and Image systems Architecture: Manages the Design and development of an enterprise scale, complex Client Management Tools (CMT) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems to deliver Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) services and capabilities for end user enterprise services. Designs and manages the developmental life cycle of endpoint devices. This includes development, testing, design, implementation, refinement, and support of the Unified Endpoint Management system(s) and unified endpoint services and capabilities. Architects and facilitates the design, test, and implementation of policies, processes and procedures that satisfy these demands: deployment of applications, deployment of mobile device profiles, deployment of operating system images, delivery of patches, updates, and upgrades, generating and reporting data about service metrics, security posture, inventory and assets, configurations, and statuses. Develop and maintain the program for the incorporation of other products/services (cloud solutions, enterprise applications, messaging & collaboration products, and telecommunications services) into a unified end user experience. Own the architecture stream in road-mapping discussions and provide inputs on feasibility and directional effort and schedule estimations. Security Architecture: Enhances cybersecurity posture by observing and incorporating NIST framework (Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, Recover) and CIS benchmarks into operational standards to harden endpoints and reduce attack surface areas. Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, highly performant and governed in accordance with data privacy and regulatory requirements. Cloud solutions Desktop and Application Virtualization: Manages the analysis that defines, designs, and implements virualized solutions, e.g. DaaS (Desktop as a Service) and AaaS (Application as a Service), and incorporates them as part of overall UEM strategy. Manages engagements as necessary with outside vendors and/or builds on public cloud or internal components when it is economically advantageous. Engage with various campus businesses, understand business environments and requirements, then develop and administer on-prem and cloud, virtual and remote applications, using appropriate tools as necessary to facilitate the needs identified. Leverages public cloud solutions like AWS, Azure, and GCP to achieve organizational "Cloud-First, Mobile-First" priorities. Enables remote work by facilitating the creation of administration services and applications usable from anywhere, and usable on any device. Enterprise Applications administration Directs the management of systems and services for a suite of cloud-based software applications utilized by the campus at large with functions covering computing device administration, computer and network security, and various messaging & collaboration needs including web conferencing and emergency notification. Analyzes, documents, and reports to stakeholders on campus' utilization of Enterprise Applications. Develops and implements enhanced architectural solutions with the application of automation procedures utilizing industry known procedural languages, e.g. Python, Pearl, etc.

End User Computing Enterprise Systems Architecture Management 20% Project, QA, Package, Change, and Release Management Provides campus with strategic and operational direction of End User Computing and Cloud Desktop and Applications Virtualization. Leads projects and provides architectural and technical guidance to engineering teams designing highly complex software systems. Develops Proof of Concept and Proof of Value plans and advocates solutions based on analysis. Responsible for guiding initiatives through: Change Management, Quality Assurance, Package Management and Release Management.

Research and Development 15% Supervises complex feasibility analysis on new and future potential End User Computing technology integrations. Gathers information and participates in selection of End User Computing systems. Establishes metrics and evaluates results. Advocates for the adoption and integration of tested and analyzed technology solutions that are determined to bring value following evaluation. Proposes, develops, and maintains services utilizing successfully integrated technologies. Practices Continual Service Improvement methodologies to frequently measure and improve on supported services and capabilities. Independently attains and maintains relevant standards, training, and certification.

Staff and deliverables Management 20% Responsible for Performance Management and staff professional development. Manages schedules, deliverables, and conflict resolution. Ensures that resources such as people and equipment are efficiently organized and allocated. As necessary, manages budgets, controls costs, and allocates resources effectively. Manages and builds relationships with stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, and employees. Provides staff with clear goals and expectations to ensure they understand what is expected of them in their role. Provides regular feedback and recognition to staff. Fosters a collaborative and positive work environment where employees can work together towards common goals.
