The Student Mental Health Coordination Services (SMHCS) office is the single point of contact for the campus community to report concerns about a student in distress or a student distressing others. As the department that collects all information regarding distressed student concerns, SMHCS Coordinators are able to construct a holistic picture of how referred students are functioning and connect them with appropriate campus resources. As a non-clinical office, SMHCS is able to collaborate with other departments on campus to provide coordination of care, interventions, social support, and follow-up services from a network of campus resources.
Working on behalf of the Division of Student Affairs and under the direction of the Dean of Student Wellness, the Coordinator of Student Mental Health Coordination Services, Basic Needs Liaison serves as the nexus of information and integration for the campus's response to students experiencing varying degrees of psychological, emotional, and psychiatric distress. The incumbent assists the coordination of student mental health services in serving as the primary contact point for members of the campus community who are concerned about and are seeking assistance for students with mental health issues. Responsible for ensuring the coherent and effective integration and deployment of services that constitute the campus's student-in-distress response system. Works closely with key offices, in particular, offices that support student access to basic needs including food, technology, housing, and other living essentials; to identify and intervene as early as possible with students whose behavior suggests the need for counseling or other support services or threatens the safety of others. Provides information and training for the campus community; fields and responds to calls, emails and referrals regarding distressed students; supports students entering or leaving UCSB emergency housing; strengthens partnerships with existing UCSB Basic Needs support structures; coordinates responses and services for individual cases (case management); and undertaking research on national best practices.

40% Distressed Student Consultation -
Independently serves as a primary point of contact for members of the campus community, including staff, faculty and students, who are seeking consultation and advice about or services for students who seem to be experiencing psychological distress. Occasionally may be called on to respond to inquiries from faculty, staff, and students after hours or on weekends. Investigates each case by applying professional knowledge of behavioral and psychological risk factors. Determines the necessity to personally meet with students or coordinate and refer them to mental health and wellbeing services. Determines appropriate university response and makes decisive judgment calls on whether to mobilize crisis management team, or notify campus police, as needed. Serves as a primary point of contact on any distressed student concerns involving potential threats to self or others and referring cases to campus multidisciplinary response teams (i.e. Student Behavioral Intervention Team (SBIT) and the Students of Concern Team (SOC Team)). Also, notifies the Threat Management Team (TMT) incident coordinator of student cases which involve or are impacting faculty and staff. Collaborates with the Office of Student Conduct (OSC) and provides professional recommendations to OSC in student cases involving mental health and wellness concerns. Responsible for the daily operation and management of the Distressed Student Response Protocol in the absence of the Associate Director.
25% Basic Needs Liaison -
Represents the SMHCS department in efforts to support and build partnerships with the UCSB Basic Needs Program, Financial Crisis Response Team, and Rapid Rehousing Team. Works to develop a system of wraparound support for students who are homeless or housing insecure and need help navigating university and community resources. Ensure that issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion are recognized and assessed as factors impacting a student’s wellbeing. Coordinates programs to support at risk students, including exploring new and innovative ways to engage students, faculty, and staff. Engages in a comprehensive approach to creating healthier learning communities via consultation and education with the campus community. Collaborates with campus mental health providers to regularly gather and disseminate information about campus mental health services and promotion of wellbeing resources via the Basic Needs newsletter.
25% Managing Student Mental Health Crises -
Works closely with the Assistant Dean of Students/SMHCS Associate Director and Dean of Student Wellness to manage student mental health crisis cases that require the attention of the university. Responsible for undertaking initial information gathering, developing recommendations for response, helping to mobilize appropriate response and/or services, and following up with the student and service providers; that is, ensuring that appropriate intervention and postvention strategies are mobilized on behalf of the student and the campus community. Establishes and maintains working relationships with university staff/administrators, faculty, and community in order to provide comprehensive response and follow up. In crisis situations, determines whether there is a "health and safety" exception to privacy laws (FERPA). As appropriate, contacts parents to share crisis information with them, as well as provide recommendations regarding care, and the student's immediate needs. Assists with the coordination of student mental health and wellness support in serving as the primary contact for residential life for mental health issue including: suicide attempts, behavior that is concerning to residents or staff, and behavior that is or may become a safety concern. Provides recommendations to residential life staff/administrators regarding whether these students should remain in the residence halls.
10% Implementation of Improvements -
Implements selected recommendations for improvement and augmentation of the current mental health services, particularly new initiatives supporting student health, wellbeing, self-care, and safety. Other duties as assigned.
