Job Summary

Director of Digital Solutions and WebThe Director will play a pivotal role in shaping our AI-first digital strategy and leading a team to implement cutting-edge digital transformation and AI initiatives. These efforts will enhance customer and team member experiences while advancing our organization's overall mission and business strategy.
The Director of Digital Solutions and Web will:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive digital strategy that aligns with UCSF's goals and objectives, positioning us as a leader in the digital landscape.
  • Drive the development and implementation of cutting-edge digital technologies within our digital ecosystem to enhance customer engagement, operational efficiency, and business growth.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to formulate and execute short- and long-term goals, ensuring the continued growth, innovation, and sustainability of UCSF's technology services.
  • Recruit, mentor, and manage a team of web platform, content strategy, UX design, software development, architecture, DevOps, analytics, accessibility, and cloud applications professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of web and mobile applications, web portals, and DevOps tools, ensuring they achieve high quality standards and meet user needs.
  • Ensure the high performance, security, and reliability of our digital solutions to meet current and future demands.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify digital solutions that drive business growth, improve customer experiences, and optimize operations.
  • Define software development strategy, goals, and roadmaps in line with the UCSF's mission and business needs. In collaboration with the enterprise community of practice, establish and enforce software development standards, best practices, and methodologies.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to ensure that UCSF remains at the forefront of web and software development.
  • Evaluate and select digital tools, platforms, and technologies to enhance UCSF's digital capabilities.
  • Manage the digital solutions budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation and cost control.
  • Analyze data and metrics to measure the effectiveness and impact of digital solutions, making data-driven decisions for continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, clients, and partners in the digital ecosystem.
  • Ensure the organization complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and cybersecurity standards.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. It is the only campus in the 10-campus UC system dedicated exclusively to the health sciences. UCSF is technologically and organizationally complex, with both centralized and departmental IT units providing support for enterprise and specialized services. UCSF IT provides education, research, and health technology services, along with shared infrastructure, security, analytics, application, and customer support services, and is essential to the organization's ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store and share sensitive information. This position is a leader in the Enterprise Systems unit, and manages in Web Services, Web & Mobile Application Development, Accessibility, Analytics, Cloud Apps, and Document/Content Management teams. We partner with other IT shared services teams, Research IT, Education IT, and Health IT to achieve UCSF's goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Requires extensive and in-depth knowledge of Information Technology principles, theories, and concepts to manage functional area(s) and provide solutions. Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities in the digital realm. Demonstrated proficiency managing web and mobile application/software development, digital design, and data analysis. Demonstrated proficiency with digital tools, platforms, web development technologies, and modern web frameworks
  • Requires knowledge of policies and procedures and ability to determine a course of action based on these guidelines. Understanding of relevant government laws and policies around data collection, analytics, and digital accessibility, including HIPAA, FERPA, and ADA rules. Strong ethical standards and commitment to cybersecurity and data privacy.
  • Clearly understands the needs and concerns of the user groups in the organization and applies knowledge to better meet those needs.
  • Ability to inspire and lead cross-functional teams and collaborate effectively with internal and external partners. Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others involving project work and initiatives.
  • 10 years of proven experience in a leadership role in digital solutions, with a track record of successful digital transformation project implementations. Demonstrated success in developing and executing digital strategies
  • Thorough knowledge of supervisory and leadership techniques in managing technical staff. Familiarity with Agile and Scrum development methodologies.
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, to include the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies. Experience with Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
  • Ability to understand the process involved to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within a large and complex technical environment.
  • Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across multiple organizations across division, college or institutional boundaries.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an executive position.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and analyzing institutional and cross-campus strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience with senior management planning and budgeting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to large groups and senior management with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in applying AI/LLM/ML to digital solutions and understanding of latest digital front door technologies and search capabilities.
  • Experience showcasing digital transformation knowledge in driving transformative change through digital technologies.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
