Job Summary

The lab is focused on identifying genes and molecular mechanisms involved in neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders using systems biology and functional genetics approaches. At the moment the lab is working on autism spectrum disorder (ASD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Our lab seeks a
Staff Research Associate (SRA)
who will aid scientist(s) on new and ongoing research projects by performing basic molecular biological techniques (including molecular cloning and Western blotting) and cell culture (including iPSC cell culture) in the laboratory.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Psychiatry is among the nation's foremost resources in the field of child, adolescent and adult mental health. Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory techniques and molecular biology principles
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for record keeping
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrates excellent attendance and professionalism
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance
  • Proven record of excelling in a team-oriented environment
  • Proven ability to work within a team to accomplish specific goals at specified times.
  • Demonstrated the skills needed to carry out a project to completion and report any problems that occurred both orally and in written form
SRA II: in addition to the above
  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Hands-on experience with basic molecular biology techniques, e.g., PCR, DNA/RNA purification, electrophoresis.
  • Hands-on experience with cell culture of iPSCs and or other mammalian cell lines.
  • Hands-on experience with molecular cloning and plasmid amplification and purification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with 2D or 3D neural cultures from iPSCs
  • Hands-on experience with expressing proteins of interest in mammalian cells including transfection/viral transduction.
  • Hands-on experience with gene expression analysis, e.g., real-time PCR
  • Hands-on experience with immunofluorescence including immunocytochemistry or flow cytometry
  • Hands-on experience with other molecular biology techniques, e.g., immunoprecipitation (IP) or Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP).
  • Hands-on experience with gel electrophoresis and Western blot
