Job Summary

The Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner will act as a key team participant in the execution of clinical and research projects to study and provide care for normal aging and neurodegenerative disorders at the .
The NP will assist in triage of referrals by reviewing medical records, brain images, contacting referring physicians and participants. The NP primary responsibilities include the direct application of clinical expertise to patients and families and maintaining quality standard of care including management of dementia-related behavioral symptoms. Responsibilities include the collection of research data thru completion of physical and neurological exams and history, family history, and administration of rating instruments, management plans addressing the care needs and goals of study participants. Duties will include review of medical records, documentation, interpretation of laboratory results, toxicity monitoring of study drug and participation in research and lab meetings.
The NP will be a member on interdisciplinary study teams composed of Neurologists, Psychologists, Psychiatrist, Social Workers, Genetic Counselors and Neurology fellows and develop management plans addressing the care needs and goals of study participants. The nurse will participate in research team meetings, perform literature searches as well as other research duties supporting the principal investigators. Activities will include teaching, precepting student nurses, occasional community engagements, program planning, preparation of reports, IRB submission and development of patient education materials.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is a clinical research unit within the UCSF Department of Neurology that investigates the clinical (neurological, cognitive, behavioral, neuroanatomic) characteristics of various neurodegenerative diseases. The Primary Investigator's (PI) research within the MAC focuses on the decision-making processes in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimer's Disease (AD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Required Qualifications

Nurse Practitioner I

  • Minimum three (3) years working with older adults with dementia or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Cantonese or Mandarin.
  • Experience with relational databases and electronic medical records.
  • Experience with clinical trials and/or research protocols.
  • Expert clinical judgment skills to function in the independent role in the Center following standard procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills in order to collaborate with patients, families, staff, providers, and community health team.
  • Ability to work with multiple demands and stress resulting from a busy clinical research setting and changing organization.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to problem situations; identifies the need for and activates emergency protocols as needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to work cross functionally and across disciplines outside specific area of expertise; proven ability to collaborate and team build with the goal to improve the patient experience and deliver high quality care.
  • Contributes to team building through participation in committees, behavior management ad hoc task force and lab meetings; contributes to positive morale through the development of formal and informal educational programs for research staff.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession including teaching and precepting advance practice nursing students.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Registered Nurse in a tertiary and/or ambulatory care settings

License/Certification

  • California Driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.

  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement.
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.
UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (APP) to be credentialed through OMAG to practice and be privileged through CIDP to function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites and affiliates. Credentialing, health plan enrollment, and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. Inability to comply with the requirements of OMAG/CIDP AT ALL TIMES will result in either, a LOA or suspension of privileges designation.
