DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Office of Research and Innovation (R&I) is housed within the Division of Academic Affairs at the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP). R&I leads a thriving systemwide innovation ecosystem with a mission to advance the frontiers of new knowledge and translate this transformative research for equitable societal benefit. To that end, R&I brings together expertise and resources from the "whole of UC," that is, from across the 10 campuses, 3 UC-affiliated national labs, Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Division, Natural Reserve System (NRS), and UC Health. In addition, R&I draws on experts from across the UC system, the State of California, and beyond to plan and implement critical, large-scale research and innovation initiatives and programs, such as those related to climate change and global pandemics. R&I works closely with UC systemwide stakeholders, such as the Council of Vice Chancellors for Research and the systemwide Academic Senate.
R&I is led by the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI). It is organized into four units: the Research Grants Program Office (RGPO), the Natural Reserve System (NRS), Innovation Transfer and Entrepreneurship (ITE), and Research Policy, Analysis and Coordination (RPAC). Together, the R&I units serve in the following roles: administrators of major research grants programs on behalf of California and UC; intellectual and operational stewards of an extensive network of 41 protected natural areas across California; systemwide strategists founded on the collective expertise and infrastructure of the "whole of UC"; facilitators of UC research translation to the general public; and leaders in national, state, and systemwide research policy and compliance.
