University of California - Los Angeles Health is Hiring a Float Mohs Tissue Technician - Dermatology, Westwood Near Los Angeles, CA

DescriptionUnder the supervision of the Dermatology Director and Mohs surgeon, you must have a minimum completion of 6 month intensive training (apprenticeship) program solely focused on the unique methods of Mohs laboratory frozen tissue process which includes: grossing and mapping, freezing, embedding and cutting horizontal sections to obtain 100% margin control, use of special stains to highlight skin cancer cells-including immunohistochemistry on frozen sections for melanoma. Mohs tech should have a minimum of 1-2 years' experience. Preparation and mixing of solutions, labeling and storage of slides, use and handling of all materials and reagents, proper disposal of stains and cleaning of glass containers, ensuring a safe environment in the lab according to OSHA standards, maintenance of fume hood filters, Maintains workload, deadline, quality control and other logs as needed. Interacts with faculty, residents and clinical staff to solve any problems regarding worklists and other orders. Works overtime, holidays, weekends and on-call as needed. Maintains a clean and properly maintained work area. Willingness to work independently as well as contribute to the goals of a team environment. Adheres to all Hospital and university policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Performs other duties as assigned by management. You will perform established duties according to Clinical laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) and guidelines. Time and type of assignments may vary upon department guidelines. Incumbent should be able to work at multiple sites, independently, be able to trouble shoot when necessary and contribute to the goals of a team environment. The Mohs Surgeon will observe and review the incumbent technical performance, which includes quality of sectioning and staining. The supervisor, manager and/or Director will review daily record keeping, CICARE, teamwork, communications and other non-technical skills. Travel to other locations as needed Salary Range: $31.82 -$41.96/hourly
QualificationsRequired: * 1-2years Mohs Technician laboratory experience. * Knowledge of CLIA laboratory protocol * Knowledge of methods for operating laboratory equipment * Knowledge of laboratory safety standards * Knowledge of CAP and JCAHO standards * Skills in accurate computer data entry in laboratory information systems. * Ability to maintain good interrelationships with peers, house staff and faculty * Ability to maintain all block logs * Print grossing sheets and labels for slides * Perform routine staining procedures including but not limited to operating and maintaining slide staining. * Embed and cut tissue and place on the slide for staining. * Stain and cover slip slides for physician review. * Prepare for Mohs surgery by setting up cryostat, staining station, and supplies. * Follow specimen protocols and procedures within required timeframes for embedding frozen surgical specimens. * Maintain, document and troubleshoot equipment, reagents, temperature logs and/or other supplies. * File surgical reports, photographs and slide * Ability to communicate with mutual respect and consideration for diversity among individuals. * Performs other duties and tasks as requested by the supervisor * Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with faculty, supervisors, peers, and customers/suppliers and patients. * Ability to work as a team member * Abilities to be perceived by others as helpful, courteous, responsive and respectful * Ability to maintain confidentiality * Skill and ability to train and assess technical performance in the Mohs technician/Mohs laboratory * Ability to adapt to changes in the work schedule when the required. * Ability to work under pressure. * Ability to communicate effectively in the English language through written and oral communication methods. * Ability to read technical documents, policies, procedures and other materials related to work. * Skill in setting priorities, which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities. * Ability to organize work and records with attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness * Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal supervision. * Ability to learn, retain and apply new information related to the job. * Ability to facilitate and adapt to change. * Ability to recognize the needs of own area of responsibility as well as the laboratory as a whole. * Manual dexterity to perform technical duties/tasks. * Ability to stand for extended periods of time * Ability to work with frequents interruptions. * Ability to maintain a neat, clean, organized work area. * Knowledge to know whether a poor stain can be "corrected." Knowledge and ability to do a variation of special stains, including Toluidine Blue and . * Ability to be punctual and maintain a satisfactory attendance record. * Knowledge of infection control, ergonomic, chemical waste, and glove fit regulations and all other General Safety procedures. Travel to other sites as needed Recommended: * Active membership to American Society of Mohs Histotechnology and National Society of Histotechnology
