University of California Davis is Hiring a PROJECT POLICY ANL 1 (Science Communication and Outreach Specialist) Near Davis, CA

Job Summary

Under direction of the Director of the California Climate Hub, will act as the coordinator for Hub communications and outreach engagements. Primary duties will include developing and delivering communication products including reports, fact sheets, and research briefs; maintaining the Climate Hub’s monthly newsletter (development and delivery); creating web-based communications (e.g., story maps, blog posts) and updating the Climate Hub webpage; contributing to the development of decision support resources; and coordinating and participating in Hub outreach and engagement activities as needed, which may be held off-site. Other functions include developing and delivering presentations, coordinating meetings and webinars, and providing programmatic support to the Hub. The hire is expected to be a fully participating member of the Climate Hub staff and will have the opportunity to participate in Hub engagements beyond the scope of their primary duties as needs, time, and interests allow.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work on computer for extended periods of time (6-8 hours per day). Occasional transporting of meeting, event, or workshop materials and supplies from offices to meeting sites or event locations. Occasional driving of vehicles to transport materials. Occasionally handling small furniture and/or equipment. Lift/maneuver office supplies weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This is appointment ends one year after the date of hire, with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, ecology, geography, natural resources, plant sciences, or related field or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience writing and/or designing public-facing communications for a broad audience (e.g., newsletters, blogs, etc.)
  • Experience and/or coursework in reading and synthesizing scientific research (i.e., peer-reviewed articles, government reports)
  • Experience working with an applied climate, agriculture, and/or natural resources boundary-spanning organization (e.g., USDA Climate Hubs, USGS Climate Adaptation Science Centers)

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to work independently to identify appropriate content for public-facing communications and create well-researched and well-written products that are ‘final review’ ready. A keen interest in science communication and stakeholder engagement
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including writing, editing, and proofreading skills to produce correspondence, presentations, and reports that reflect high attention to detail and high standards of professionalism.
  • Ability to appropriately organize and adjust workflow to the deadlines of multiple projects and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects and/or with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise.
  • Practical experience conducting scientific data analysis, and a proven ability to understand and communicate analytical methods and analysis results via written syntheses and data visualizations.
  • Experience maintaining / managing social media accounts for public-facing organizations (e.g., companies, research centers or institutions, University departments or clubs, etc.)
  • An understanding of the effects of climate change on California’s natural and working lands, commensurate with experience
  • Experience coordinating events, workshops, and meetings.
