University of California Davis is Hiring a Clinical Lab Scientist (CLIN LAB SCI) Near Davis, CA

As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the IRC Clinical QC Testing Laboratory, the incumbent participates in the Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program (UCBCP) by receiving and screening donated umbilical cord blood to evaluate the total nucleated cell count in order to determine if the units meet the cutoff for further processing and cryopreservation at the public cord blood bank. In addition to performing the above testing, the incumbent will collaborate as a subject matter expert in Quality Control, Flow Cytometry and Clinical Diagnostic testing, as well as safety testing for the Good Manufacturing Practice Facility (GMP) and clients of the GMP, the Alpha Stem Cell Clinic, the CAR-T Manufacturing Program within the Stem Cell Program and Gene Therapy Center, and multiple University of California Researchers as well as private companies.

As needed, the incumbent develops new flow cytometry procedures, modifies standard methodologies, formalizes standard operating procedures, collects, and extrapolates data on new methodologies to develop tests; instructs other laboratory personnel in the performance of new/modified procedures; operates laboratory equipment including but not limited to a Flow Cytometer, Automated Hematology Analyzer, Endotoxin Reader, Microscope, and a Biological Safety Cabinet.

As a licensed CLS, the incumbent communicates with physicians, nurses, umbilical cord blood collectors, public cord blood bank, and research personnel regarding daily testing-related issues, verifies test results, coordinates sample delivery, test scheduling and assists with experimental design with regard to patient safety and compliance with all clinical and research regulatory bodies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Licensed in CA. CLS license must be current and renewed as required.
  • The position is required to acquire 24 units of continuing education biannually as required to maintain license.
  • Experience with hematology, microbiology, medical terminology, human anatomy, and the skills required to completed laboratory tests within these disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical research Standard Operating Procedure development and implementation.
  • Experience in cell and gene therapy product manufacturing
  • Experience in phlebotomy procedures
  • Experience with statistical analysis

Department Description

This position closely coordinates with the Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Laboratory (HPCL), Apheresis Department, Umbilical Cord Blood Collection Program (UCBCP), Stem Cell Program’s Alpha Stem Cell Clinic, GMP Facility and the CAR-T Program for testing of diagnostic samples and novel cell and gene therapy clinical investigational products. This position supports departmental goals through the performance of accurate clinical and research testing within the limits of strict timelines and responsible resource stewardship. As it pertains to the testing in the Quality Control Testing Laboratory, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements are adhered to during this work.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to work variable shifts and on call as needed. Occasional evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
