DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

JOB SUMMARY

Independent of supervision, in a hospital setting, as a part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis, and inducing and monitoring anesthesia. Provide a broad spectrum of technical, surgical & anesthesia support, and to coordinate service needs. Manage service receiving schedule, resolve frequently changing patient needs and client schedules. Provide Surgical Support assisting with instruction of professional students, interns, residents and staff in ophthalmology procedures and paraveterinary techniques. Clean and organize the ophthalmology exam rooms and treatment areas as well as general equipment maintenance.

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

This position may be eligible for a hiring bonus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages and holiday shifts).
  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
  • May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
  • Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Experience independently providing intense, moment to moment monitoring/reassessment of emergent/critically ill patients.
  • Experience independently inducing and monitoring anesthesia, operating basic anesthesia equipment i.e., anesthesia machines, ventilators and various monitoring and lab equipment.
  • Experience performing catheterization and blood collection using various vessels.
  • Skill to effectively communication orally or in writing and ability to interact with a diverse group of people to include clients, clinicians, students and staff.

Preferred:

  • Experienced in keeping inventory and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Experience performing hospital sanitation and infection control.
  • Skill to use aseptic technique when opening and handling sterile packs for all types of surgical procedures.
