The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, in the College of Biological Sciences, University of California, Davis, invites applications for an Academic Coordinator (50%) position in EEOP.

NATURE AND PURPOSE
Academic Coordinators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. This service may be provided to academic departments, to organized research units, to students, or to the general public. Determination of the appropriate level for an appointment for an Academic Coordinator shall take into consideration such factors as program scope and complexity. The duties of an Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Individuals in an Academic Coordinator title who are assigned research or instructional duties are required to hold a dual title.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
College of Biological Sciences - Educational Enrichment and Outreach Programs houses programs that serve undergraduates from marginalized communities. The EEOP Assistant Director provides general oversight and support for all aspects of current and future EEOP programs that serve lower division students (those in their first and second years). These include the EEOP flagship program, the Biology Undergraduate Scholars Program (BUSP), and other affiliated lower division programs (currently the BUSP Research Component, the Advancing Diversity in Aging Research Program, and the Advancing Diversity in Neuroscience Program).

I. COORDINATION OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (85%)

A. General Program Management - 30%

Responsible for all aspects of BUSP and BUSP-affiliated lower-division programs.

Supervise EEOP personnel who deliver BUSP curriculum and advising (EEOP Chemistry and Biology Specialists). Oversee the BUSP biology academic support curriculum.

Develop and distribute BUSP and BUSP-affiliated lower division program advertising materials and applications. Review applications and have final authority on selection of BUSP participants. Assist Director with reviewing and selecting BUSP-affiliated lower division program participants.

Facilitate student placement into faculty-supervised research laboratories (solicit faculty to act as laboratory sponsors, monitor student progress in laboratory research, arrange hiring and financial payment to participants).

In collaboration with EEOP staff, monitor student academic progress. Provide advice and guidance to students and connect students to campus resources when appropriate.

In consultation with the Director and Evaluator, identify problem areas and implement necessary corrections. Make strategic plans for program enhancements.

Maintain excellent working relationships with other campus units, particularly the Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers, the Internship and Career Center, the Undergraduate Research Center, and the Biology Academic Success Center (BASC).

Organize BUSP and BUSP-affiliated program activities and events.

B. Coordination of Courses and Curricula - 30%
In collaboration with the EEOP Biology Specialist, coordinate guest speakers and classroom activities for the BUSP first-year course, BIS 11 (2 units, fall quarter). Collaborate with course Instructor of Record and the EEOP Biology Specialist to refine the BIS 11 curriculum, including the syllabus, online resources for students, and student assessments. Coordinate invited guest speakers.

In collaboration with EEOP and other campus staff, coordinate classroom activities for the BUSP laboratory skills course, BIS 11L (1 unit, spring quarter). This course for first-year students, teaches basic laboratory skills that are transferable to research laboratories as well as upper-division laboratory courses, with the goals of improving the students’ research experience and their performance in laboratory course. Collaborate with course Instructor of Record to develop the syllabus, online resources for students, and student assessments.

Coordinate guest speakers and classroom activities for BIS 98 courses (1 unit, fall, winter, and spring quarters) This course series enhance the intellectual component of laboratory research by building critical skills such oral and written presentation abilities and accessing primary literature, share insights from laboratory research experiences, and form reinforcing academically-focused peer groups. Refine the syllabi and update online resources for students. Coordinate invited guest speakers.

Coordinate seminar series for BUSP-affiliated lower division programs (0 units, summer session 1 and fall quarter). Invite guest speakers, develop seminar schedules, communicate with speakers and student participants. These seminars provide students with insight into specific research fields (aging biology, cancer biology, neuroscience etc.) to assist their transition into research internships.

C. Administration - 25%
Assist EEOP Director with preparing grant reports and developing proposals for funding to appropriate granting agencies.

Assist EEOP Director with staff hiring, according to university and grantor requirements.

Complete yearly employee evaluations for supervised EEOP staff.

Assist with maintaining the EEOP website.

In collaboration with the EEOP Evaluator, track participant short- and long-term outcomes, assist with curating program data and maintenance of student records.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)
Provide guest lectures in university courses related to expertise; produce scholarly works or contribute to projects relevant to undergraduate research, education, and the plight of underrepresented, disadvantaged, and disabled students; engage in learning opportunities related to diversity.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
Serve on university committees related to undergraduate education, research, diversity, governance or policy formulation; act as a liaison between regional elementary, middle, high schools, and community colleges and the University. Assist Director with outreach efforts to diverse students registered in a school site located in the Woodland Joint Unified School District in Woodland, CA.
