Departmental Overview
The Insititute of Transportation Studies (ITS) hosts a number of faculty members from nine UC Berkeley academic departments and schools and approximately 150 researchers and students are associated with ITS through our various research and educational activities.
This position supports the development of a public web database for storage, processing, and retrieval of pedestrian and bicycle count data. The system will include a map interface, a data dashboard, and backend for data validation and processing.
Involves writing programs in web programming languages, designing related databases, web interfaces and content. Designs, develops, modifies, tests, evaluates and maintains medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. Work includes test-to-production processes, quality assurance, maintenance and documentation of web applications programming.
**This is a 2-year contract position with the possibility of extension and/or conversion to career.**

Responsibilities
25% Plans, designs, develops, modifies, debugs, deploys and evaluates complex software for functional areas. Responsible for the support and development of a public web database for storage, processing, and retrieval of pedestrian and bicycle count data. Develops and tests map interface integration; creation of data dashboard, and backend for data validation and processing.
10% Analyzes existing software or works to formulate logic for new complex systems and devises complex algorithms.
10% Analyzes the design and use of complex data sources. Writes programs in web programming languages to develop extensive PHP, HTML, Javascript, and CSS user interface templates based on functionality of existing legacy interface and through consultations with university based UI/UX design experts. Designs related databases, web interfaces and content.
10% Manages feasibility studies for new applications and / or revisions to existing systems. Conducts periodic reviews of frameworks and software plugins used to develop the application. As needed, makes updates to improve security or ensure compatibility, perform the necessary research, development and testing required to update the application.
10% Specifies, develops and executes complex test plans.
5% Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards.
5% Applies moderately complex programming security practices.
5% Understands and applies industry practices, community standards and department policies and procedures relating to work assignments.
5% Trains users in conversion and implementation of system.
5% Performs complex data modeling, performance and integration testing and builds interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents.
5% Interacts with senior level internal personnel.
5% May serve as technical lead for a software development project of moderate scope.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.
Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
Demonstrated ability to understand and build custom SQL queries for the database.
Thorough experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
Thorough experience with common programming tools.
Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Demonstrated broad problem solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
Experience developing web mapping applications using Google Maps API, ArcGIS Javacript API, Leaflet, etc.
Experience using PHP language as a back-end programming language.
Experience managing source in GIT or comparable version control system.
Experience utilizing Microsoft SQL Server for small to medium size projects.
Experience developing web or standalone tools based on design mockups.
Salary & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $74,300 to $104,400 annually, commensurate with experience. This 2-year contract position is 100% FTE and eligible for full benefits.
