Position description
The University of California Berkeley seeks applications for an Academic Coordinator to support all UC Berkeley Natural Reserve System reserves and field stations. This position is for a two year period and is renewable based on performance and availability of funding.
The UCNRS (University of California Natural Reserve System) is housed in the UC Office of the President. The UCNRS was established in 1965 and is currently composed of 41 reserves distributed across the State of California. Each UC campus oversees the operations and management of a subset of reserves. The mission of the UCNRS is to contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service in protected natural areas throughout California.
The Berkeley campus has oversight over the following 7 UCNRS sites:
Angelo Coast Range Reserve
Blue Oak Ranch Reserve
Jenny Pygmy Forest Reserve
Hastings Natural History Reservation
Point Reyes Field Station
Chickering American River Reserve
Sagehen Creek Field Station
Reporting to the UC Berkeley NRS Faculty Representative, the Academic Coordinator will work closely with UC Berkeley NRS sites and serve as a point of contact for Reserve Managers, Faculty Directors, and Reserve Stewards. Additionally, this person will coordinate the administrative and programmatic activities of the stations in collaboration with personnel, and serve as the Reserves liaison to UCB's Vice Chancellor of Research Office, financial analysts working with UCB NRS reserves, and other campus administrators and staff.
Responsibilities:
The UCB NRS Academic Coordinator will play a critical role assisting UC Berkeley reserves and field stations with developing, organizing, coordinating, and monitoring UCB NRS-related programs. The Academic Coordinator will also deliver reports and presentations, facilitate and advocate for UCB NRS reserve goals on campus, and coordinate play a facilitative role in the day to day administrative, business, and programmatic activities, as well as capital projects at the NRS reserves and field stations administered by UC Berkeley.
Specific programs to be overseen by the Academic Coordinator include:
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs on UCB reserves
Undergraduate internship programs
UC NRS Field Science Fellowship
Graduate Student Awards for Field Research
Other NRS-related programs
The Academic Coordinator will also support UCB NRS reserves and field stations in areas including, but not limited to
Outreach and Education:
Facilitate discussions and presentations for departments on campus, in coordination with Faculty and Resident Managers, to raise the awareness of Berkeley Reserves and the NRS.
Provide assistance to faculty across campus in the development of new interdisciplinary courses and facilitate delivery of courses that utilize UCB NRS reserves and field stations.
Administration:
Help Reserve and Faculty Directors develop or update emergency plans, including evacuation plans, maps, and communication plans. Coordinate emergency plans with campus and first responders.
Website management and creating and disseminating electronic UCB newsletters regarding upcoming and current research being done on UCB NRS reserves.
Support Reserve Managers on issues related to land stewardship, resource management, and implementing UC Berkeley's research and teaching priorities.
Supervise students as needed.
Research Administration and Finance:
Provide reserve managers with on-campus grant writing support (e.g., liaising with Sponsored Projects Office, etc.). Identify extramural funding opportunities and work with reserve leadership to develop successful funding proposals (individually and/or collectively).
Support Reserve Managers on issues related to land stewardship, resource management, and implementing UC Berkeley's research and teaching priorities.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Advanced Degree or, Equivalent International Degree
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
2 Years of Work Experience
Preferred qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.
Experience in promoting opportunities for groups underrepresented in the sciences
Ability to work and communicate with faculty, staff, and reserve stakeholders on various reserve and field station events/ programs.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work collaboratively and build collegial relationships with staff at each field station/reserve local and regional organizations.
Interest in facilities management.
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Excellent written skills.
Experience with website maintenance, social media outlets, protocol, other software, and technology.
Research and teaching experience in environmental sciences at a variety of levels, especially university-level instruction.
Ability to lead field trips.
Excellent organizational management skills including budget reporting and mentoring staff.
Experience with grant writing or raising funds.
Ability to learn UC internal systems and operations (e.g., purchasing, budgeting, personnel, administration, organization)
Interest in natural history, flora, fauna, local ecosystems, and scientific research in California.
