Departmental Overview
At the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley, we have long lived by defining principles that guide us and differentiate us. These principles serve us daily in our reasonings and actions and aid us in our decision making. We educate an estimated 320 students annually. Our O.D. program is a 4-year program with clinical training provided at 2 campus clinics, 10 satellite clinics (community care), 7 VA clinics, and 24 external clinics across the country. Our one-year post-graduate residency programs provide advanced clinical education in specialty areas of optometry to 18 residents with placement on and off campus, and our Vision Science program consists of 40 PhD students.

Responsibilities
Plan day-to-day and longer-term scientific questions and goals and determine experimental approaches in consultation with PI. Become familiar with the relevant scientific literature forming the basis of the experimental work. Work with lab animals, including all associated procedures required to isolate and work with tissue samples. Perform electrophysiological and imaging experiments on mammalian retinas. Analyze the experimental data and prepare it for publication and presentation at scientific meetings. Organize, attend and present at regular lab meetings. General laboratory maintenance duties as required.
Required Qualifications
Strong grounding in biology, chemistry, and physics. Programming experience and or strong computer skills. Strong written and verbal communication. Ability to work as part of a larger team.
Education:
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Neuroscience, molecular biology, imaging, microscopy experience. Experience in imaging or electrophysiology.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week) non-exempt career position, which is paid bi-weekly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $27.09 (step 1.0) - $29.90 (step 6.0).
