Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's School of Law is one of the nation's great centers for legal education, ever exploring and pushing new intellectual boundaries while tackling urgent, real-world issues. The law school is also known for its vibrant and engaged community of students and scholars who are committed to providing leadership and making a difference on problems of local, national and global import. Currently ranked among the top law schools in the country, the School of Law has ambitious development goals as it looks to continue producing leaders in law, government, and society.

The Business in Society Institute (BISI) is a project of the Berkeley Center for Law and Business. Society's expectations of companies are changing, and companies are responding. Many companies today go beyond compliance with the law to implement policies in line with the values of their shareholders, employees, customers, and other stakeholders. An increasing number are engaging in activities that were traditionally conducted by governments and nonprofits. Navigating fiduciary duties and competing stakeholder interests raises a number of complex corporate governance questions. BISI's mission is to define and advance a legal and policy agenda that encourages companies to account for stakeholders and the environment.

The purpose of companies in society is changing, and Berkeley Law's Center for Law and Business (BCLB) is at the forefront of research on how this change is impacting corporate governance. This position will assist BCLB's Executive Director in:

  • Researching trends in environmental, social, and governance issues for curriculum development, academic publications, practitioner-focused publications, and brief blog posts;
  • Assisting in developing curriculum for in-residence courses, online education offerings, and executive education programs;
  • Conducting outreach to and managing relationships with key stakeholders;
  • Planning and administering major symposia;
  • Overseeing the strategy for and administration of the Center's student programming;
  • Assisting in developing Berkeley Law's first online course in corporate sustainability;
  • Scaling the brand by developing and implementing its social media strategy.
