Departmental Overview
The mission of the Berkeley Center for Jewish Studies (CJS) is to gather faculty, students, and visiting academics for research and debate across the wide scholarly landscape of Jewish Studies. The CJS is committed to educating students and the larger community about the richness, depth, and diversity of Jewish history and culture. The Center is a diverse and interdisciplinary campus unit administered through the Arts & Humanities Division in the College of Letters & Science. Both the graduate and undergraduate academic programs emphasize this interdisciplinary agenda. PhD students can apply to the faculty committee to pursue a Designated Emphasis in Jewish Studies' in addition to their primary doctoral subject. Undergraduates in any department can choose a Minor in Jewish Studies' in addition to their major field of study. The Center also sponsors an annual series of Endowed Lectures, and hosts post-doctoral visiting scholars and visiting faculty who augment both course offerings and public lectures. Close collaboration with several affiliated institutions serves to enhance programming through co-sponsorship and outreach to a broad audience around the Bay Area.
The Program Director will oversee the Antisemitism Education Initiative (AEI), a major program of the Center for Jewish Studies. The AEI offers resources and consultations on antisemitism to staff, administration and student leaders at Berkeley, universities across California, and nationwide. At Berkeley, the AEI collaborates closely with administrators on both prevention and rapid response, designs and runs trainings for staff and students, brings distinguished experts on antisemitism from around the world to speak, and creates multimedia presentations for use on and far beyond our campus. During the three years since its founding, the AEI has made a major impact on our campus and established a wider reputation as a national leader. Supported by a major grant from the Glazer Foundation, the AEI will expand significantly its impact and broaden the reach of its trainings and consultations to a number of universities across California. This will include organizing a major conference in 2023 on antisemitism and other forms of exclusion that will bring together scholars and practitioners from a range of fields (a major budget has already been secured for this conference).

Responsibilities
The Program Director will serve as the point person and first contact for all issues related to antisemitism, and will continue and expand antisemitism training and programming on campus. PD will work closely with the faculty leaders of the AEI and CJS and the leadership of Berkeley Hillel. PD will organize and facilitate regular check-in and coordination meetings with key faculty and stakeholders, student leaders, and administrators, and will report regularly to the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Jewish Life and Campus Climate. PD will work with faculty and other key partners to consolidate expertise, knowledge, and experience in support of ongoing program development and growth. PD will be the lead organizer of a major conference in 2023 on antisemitism and other forms of exclusion. PD will track antisemitic incidents and prepare written reports on campus climate. PD will collaborate in all campus trainings and AEI programs, and working with research consultants, will prepare an annual report on the number, impact, outcomes and feedback of AEI trainings and programming. PD will continue outreach and coalition building at Berkeley, in coordination with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion officers and other administrators, and programs like the Othering and Belonging Institute and the Helen Diller Institute of Jewish Law and Israel Studies. PD will launch the California Antisemitism Project, through which they will work with other university campuses and colleagues in California to design AEI training materials, tools, and programs that are tailored to support the specific needs of their campuses. PD will design a system to track the impact of the California Antisemitism Project on other campuses, including numbers of trainings, usage of materials, and number of constituents reached. PD will write grant proposals for further funding.
Required Qualifications
Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail. Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of the structure and operations of universities, or other large non-profits. Educational background or work experience related to broader diversity or social justice issues. Educational background or work experience related to antisemitism. Significant knowledge or firsthand experience of Israeli politics and society. Demonstrated capacity or potential for grant-writing or donor-based fundraising. Experience working with organizations in the broader Jewish community. A Master's or other advanced degree in Jewish Studies, antisemitism and/or a field related to the position.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 2-year, full-time (40 hours/week), Contract Appointment, eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.
