Departmental Overview
New Student Services (NSS) empowers undergraduate students to succeed and facilitates their transition to UC Berkeley. This process is known as the Golden Bear Experience, which consists of two parts: Before Students Arrive (advising and prep, online) and After Students Arrive (Golden Bear Orientation, and Getting Your Bearings, on campus).Our MissionThe overarching goals of the Golden Bear Experience are to: Welcome new students into UC Berkeley's scholarly community and lay the foundation for fostering their intellectual identity. Create opportunities for participants to gain an understanding of academic requirements. Create opportunities for participants to connect with university and college resources, services, and support structures. Create opportunities for participants to engage with campus traditions and the range of UC Berkeley's unique cultural communities. Create opportunities for participants to engage with their peers and the broader campus community. Set the path for a lifelong relationship with the campus. The Golden Bear Experience for many years was fondly known as Cal Student Orientation or CalSO .The Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for coordinating transitional programs for 8,500 new students and their family members each year, creating programs for students that will assist them in building relationships to foster leadership, personal growth, and meaningful engagement with faculty and advisers, to make connections with campus resources, to become involved as active leaders in campus life so they will become critical thinkers and engaged leaders. The Program Coordinator will oversee a component of new student transition outside of Golden Bear Orientation. Student transition begins as soon as they accept their office of admission and extends into the first semesters. Golden Bear Orientation plays an integral role in that transition, but must be supported before and after with intention that requires building relationships with many campus partners.The Program Coordinator assists in Golden Bear Orientation programming, student staff training, and student coordinator supervision and serves as a key individual in the development of Orientation Mentors and Orientation Leaders. Researches, develops, and executes training and supervisory structure for 750 Orientation Leaders and 60 Orientation Mentors.

Responsibilities
Golden Bear Orientation Programming: Assist in the designs and implementation of programming components within Golden Bear Orientation in collaboration with other NSS professional and student staff, and campus partners. Programming implementation will require building relationships with campus stakeholders and executing coordinated outreach. Programming focuses could include student wellness, violence and harassment prevention, late night programming, campus department involvement, transfer student programs and parent orientation. Makes recommendations to management for changes and/or development of new activities/services. Golden Bear Experience: Assist in the designs and implementation of the overall new student transition process, the "Golden Bear Experience." Student transition begins before Golden Bear Orientation and continues throughout their first semesters at Berkeley. The Program Coordinator(s) will have a specific focus: pre-arrival communication/experience or post-Golden Bear Orientation transition. Supervision of Student Coordinators: Supervises two (2) to three (3) Student Coordinators. Directs, designs, instructs, and evaluates a year-long leadership development program for Student Coordinators. Student Coordinators will support the supervision and development of Orientation Mentors and Leaders, as well as support multiple components of Golden Bear Orientation Programming. Independently handles individual cases regarding student supervision, and/or oversees limited programs as described below: Researches, develops, and executes training and curriculum for Orientation Mentor and Orientation Leader recruitment and development. Work with NSS staff to develop curriculum, co-teach courses, evaluate orientation leaders, and prepare them for Golden Bear Orientation. Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders critical to program success including liaison with the Dean of Students portfolio, multiple departments within the Division of E&I, Student Affairs Communications, SIS team, Tang Center. Specific relationships will depend on Golden Bear Experience and Golden Bear Orientation responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of student development, advising and counseling techniques. Thorough knowledge of undergraduate (and parent) orientation and transition programs. Knowledge of leadership theory. Curriculum design and teaching experience of an undergraduate course or seminar. Program management of large campus events for students. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn Student Affairs/Student Life specialization. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Ability in problem identification, reasoning. Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Knowledge of FERPA.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Advanced level knowledge of student development theory, multicultural competencies, advising and mentoring competencies; emerging research on parents of college students, course design and development, and leadership development and training.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/Training:
Master's Degree in related professional field preferred or 5 additional years equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $69,000.00 - $75,000.00.
