Position description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoc Scholar under the supervision of Dr. Kristin Dobbin, in the areas of environmental justice, environmental policy, and natural resource management.
The postdoctoral scholar will play a key role on the drinking water project team for the implementation of a large, interdisciplinary California Climate Action Grant called "COEQWAL: Equitable stewardship of California's water in a changing climate." The project aims to democratize the tools and information used in water allocation planning in California by developing a user-driven framework for water planning that leverages existing models used to operate California's major water supply systems. An overarching goal is to empower end-users historically excluded from decision making by providing meaningful, timely, and actionable information regarding their vulnerabilities to changes in water operations in an increasingly variable climate. COEQWAL will follow a structured, participatory process to identify user-defined objectives and evaluate alternative operational scenarios. The 2-year, $9M project will support a team of over 50 researchers from 7 academic institutions across California. The project will also engage dozens of external entities, including NGOs, community groups, water districts, state and federal government agencies, and Tribal governments.
Specifically, the postdoctoral scholar will help lead research design, data collection, and analysis to assess the drinking water supply and affordability implications of diverse climate and management scenarios for surface water dependent public water systems in California. Findings from this work are expected to yield important scholarly and policy insights on securing and maintaining the human right to water under climate change. This work could include both qualitative and quantitative methods depending on the experience and interests of the scholar. The scholar will also coordinate the project team's advisory committee and lead community, tribal, and policy outreach both to inform the project design/analysis and for the dissemination of our findings. The scholar will lead and collaborate on peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications.
Job duties include:
Mixed method social science data collection

Preparation of non-peer reviewed research outputs targeting policymakers and other stakeholders/communities.
Participation in interdisciplinary research team meetings
Project management
Convening and facilitating project advisory committee
Stakeholder and advisory committee communications
Development of, and compliance with, human subjects research protocols
Oral research presentations to diverse audiences
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date. The candidate should have no more than three years of post-degree research experience by start date.
Preferred qualifications
Experience working with environmental justice communities/organizations
Knowledge of California water policy and water law
Experience working with drinking water related data including the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS)
Proficiency in Spanish (oral and written)
Proficiency in R
Experience with, or training in, community-based or participatory research
Experience with, or training in, conducting interviews and/or focus groups
Experience with, or training in, data science
Experience with mixed-method social science research
Interest in, or experience with, interdisciplinary and team science
