Position description
The School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in global nutrition and food systems. The position will be housed in the Public Health Nutrition program in the division of Community Health Sciences, in the lab led by Dr. Isabel Madzorera, an Assistant Professor in Global Nutrition and Food Systems. The research focuses on using nutrition epidemiologic methods to assess diet quality as a key modifiable risk factor for health outcomes in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and to identify the role of food systems and other contributing factors to the triple burden of malnutrition in these contexts, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Independently lead analyses of existing datasets including dietary data and data from epidemiologic studies to examine priority research questions in the following areas of research:
Develop or validate metrics for diet quality for different population groups.
Explore the nexus of food systems, diet quality, and the triple burden of malnutrition and interventions to address this.
Evaluate links between food systems and food environments with pregnancy or birth outcomes and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Contribute to systematic reviews/metanalyses on these and other topics.
First-author and co-author abstracts, poster presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
Contribute to the development of research grants and projects in the focus areas, including actively contributing to pilot studies.
Contribute to sponsor technical report writing as required and communicate with research partners.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date.
The candidate should have no more than three years of postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment.
Preferred qualifications
Ph.D. degree in nutrition, epidemiology, global health, or related public health field.
Evidence of quantitative, analytical, and writing skills.
Interest in global nutrition or food systems research or programs.
Research experience.
Expert knowledge of statistical analysis software SAS (preferred), Stata, or R.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, under supervision, and as part of a team.
Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills are required, as well as, strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with strong attention to detail and excellent time management. Meticulous and consistent follow-through on projects is required.
