University of California Berkeley is Hiring a POSTDOC - Enterprising Science Program (ESP) - Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) Near Berkeley, CA

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for up to four Research Postdoctoral Scholar positions.
At the IGI, we believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to realizing the promise of genome engineering. We strive to provide a workplace that is welcoming, inclusive, and reflects the diversity of our community, with equal opportunity in hiring, development, and advancement.
The HS Chau Enterprising Science Program (ESP) at the IGI is committed to solving gender inequity in bio-entrepreneurship. The program supports those whose work involves the development of solutions for some of the world's greatest problems. Successful candidates will align with the IGI's mission of bridging revolutionary genome-editing and biotechnology tool development to affordable and accessible solutions in human health, climate, and agriculture; working toward a world where such technology is routinely applied to treat genetic disease, enable sustainable agriculture, and help achieve a carbon-neutral economy.
The ESP is intended to:
  • Promote gender equity in science and entrepreneurship.
  • Encourage post-doctoral individuals who may not have considered becoming entrepreneurs to explore their ideas in a supportive community environment.
  • Support these early stage participants as they develop their ideas such that they may be more prepared to enter later stage opportunities such as those at UC Berkeley (for example Skydeck and the Bakar Bioenginuity Hub) if desired.
  • Enable the translation of genomics and biotechnology research into impactful solutions, including commercial application.
  • Provide financial, scientific, and educational support to participants and build a lively community of scientists, advisors, mentors, and entrepreneurs.
  • Help participants find pathways to translate their research and ideas into practical applications.
Successful candidates will be matched with a faculty mentor based on their area of research and participate in a year-long training program. Applications are welcome from any area of biomedical/agricultural research. Our particular interests include the following:
Genome engineering tools and applications
Biomedical research
Artificial intelligence as it relates to biomedical or agricultural research
Crop engineering and sustainability
Carbon neutral economy
Microbiome research
Therapeutic delivery technology
The ESP Post-docs will engage in a variety of exciting learning opportunities and networking events. Each participant will be paired with a faculty mentor and recommended advisors who can provide guidance on scientific and business practices through regular meetings during the year-long program. ESP post-docs may also receive additional funding support for materials, supplies and use of core facilities. The program will be carried out in new self-contained laboratory facilities within the IGI building that will be available only to ESP post-docs, as needed. Note, this opportunity is only one year in duration and is not eligible for reappointment.
At the end of the one year appointment (Phase 1), ESP Post-docs will be eligible to apply to become an Entrepreneur for the Phase 2 program which will include additional support from a third party donor. Phase 2 Entrepreneurs will no longer be employed by UC Berkeley and must incorporate their businesses and find their own laboratory space. More information about the Enterprising Science Program can be found in the links section of this recruitment.
