Departmental Overview
University Health Services (UHS) serves the campus by providing comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited primary medical care, counseling and psychological services and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. The UHS provides on-campus medical and mental health care and coordinates off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. Departments serving students include general medical, specialty and urgent care clinics, counseling and psychological services, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology and health promotion. In addition, the UHS administers a major medical insurance plan, the Student Health Insurance Plan. UC Berkeley Faculty and Staff are eligible for services for work related injuries and pre-hire screenings in the Occupational Health Clinic, and Urgent Care.
Under the direction and the supervision of the Occupational Health Nurse Manager, the Clinic/Medical Assistant 1 Per Diem supports clinicians and health care team members in providing for the needs of our patients and rendering the best possible care. Performance reflects a sound knowledge base pertinent to skill level in assigned clerical and administrative support duties, data collection, all aspects of patient care management, and completing assessments. Provides care for the comfort and well being of patients. May be assigned to various units in UHS.
Responsibilities
Clinic Reception
1. Greets patients, verifies eligibility, accurately completes registration of patients using correct forms.
2. Answers telephone and refers to appropriate personnel as required to meet patient needs: Takes clear and accurate messages.
3. Schedules/reschedules patient appointments, using a computerized appointment system to maximize clinic efficiency.
4. Prints and scans necessary forms for patient visits.
5. Demonstrates priority setting ability and organizational skills.
6. Assists in maintaining smooth clinic operations and optimal patient flow: demonstrates initiative in carrying out duties.
7. Directs or escorts patients as necessary. Assures that patients leaving the area have appropriate instructions, forms and referral information.
8. Trains and orients new personnel as directed by CA Supervisor.
9. Other duties as assigned.
Intake and Patient Care
1. Access EHR and documents appropriate chief complaint and all patient interactions according to established guidelines.
2. Takes temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, weight as indicated per unit Guidelines including (pulse oximetry and peak flow as indicated). and rooms patient as per unit guidelines. Documents findings and reports abnormal findings to RN.
3. Assists clinicians with examinations and procedures, using sterile techniques if indicated.
4. Instructs patient in specimen collection and performs specific testing (if training and competency have been validated) as defined by assigned unit, i.e., check visual acuity using Snellen chart, performs spirometry and urine dipstick, etc.
5. Assists with wound care according to standards of unit.
6. Fits, applies ace wraps, slings, crutches and instructs patient in use of same.
7. Applies splints and instructs patient in use of same if certified to do so.
8. Removal of uncomplicated/basic splints & casts if training and competency have been validated.
9. Reports, intervenes appropriately and documents unsafe conditions and/or adverse patient conditions. Completes incident reports as per UHS protocol.
Clinic Maintenance and Supplies
1. Demonstrates ability to use equipment correctly and safely.
2. Keeps inventory of supplies and restocks in assigned area, as needed, including patient education material
3. Informs purchasing department of stock needed as per guidelines.
4. Unpacks and shelves goods received
5. Cleans rooms in assigned area as per protocol.
6. Process contaminated articles, prepares packs for sterilization, and sterilizes equipment as needed and per infection control guidelines, if training and competency have been validated
Communication
1. Respects and guards confidentiality of patients and other staff members.
2. Demonstrates courteous and service-oriented behavior at all times when interacting with patients, families, and UHS staff.
3. Recognizes interpersonal conflict and intervenes to promote resolution of conflict; deals with conflict on a one-to-one basis.
4. Attends staff meetings and keeps abreast of current issues when not able to attend. Actively participates in discussion of problem identification and resolution.
5. Requests and accepts constructive criticism.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Graduation from high school [or GED] and minimum of one year of appropriate experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Current BLS
Skills, knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position including:
Minimum of 6-12 months in a high volume medical setting that includes medical assisting and medical receptionist duties and appointment making.
Knowledge and experience using computer skills, medical terminology and experience with basic medical charting; knowledge of electronic medical records.
Ability to organize, coordinate and complete projects effectively and within deadlines.
Well-developed people skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure; demonstrated sensitivity to enthnic, culture and lifestyle diversity.
Excellent customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Current Medical Assistant certification
Salary & Benefits
