Departmental Overview
The Berkeley International Office functions to ensure that all visiting international students and scholars have successful academic and personal experiences during their stay at UC Berkeley. We provide advising on matters related to a wide array of federal regulations, academic procedures, personal adjustment, and career development. We also support a wide array of academic units through visa processing for students, scholars, staff, and faculty.

Responsibilities
Applies professional Student Services concepts in providing a variety of student services to the international student population served by the organization, to faculty and management within that organization, the UC Berkeley campus, affiliates, local, state and federal agencies.
Academic Advising:
Provides advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress towards completion of study, alternative academic options, scheduling conflicts, and similar issues in relation to federal regulatory requirements.
Immigration Advising:
Advises international students, campus staff and faculty about procedures, policies and regulations related to all types of nonimmigrant status that can be used by international students at the University. This information will be dispensed in person or electronically.
Financial Aid:
Participates in the processing, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options. Assess students' financial ability to sustain their academic objectives. Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to federal programs governing the support of international students. Analyzes and interprets data for production of visa documents for new students and continuing students as needed. Communicates with students on pre-arrival procedures.
Orientations and Events:
Conducts orientations of new international students. Advises international students and their dependents on a variety of matters related to their stay at UC-Berkeley. Coordinates and implements non-complex events that support the educational, cultural and social needs of the students. Assists in the planning and implementation of complex events.
Career Counseling:
Advises department/college/school students on employment preparation, timelines and regulatory requirements. Organizes and presents workshops related to employment. Refers students to campus Career Center and other resources on campus.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Knowledge and/or ability to learn of University rules, processes, procedures and regulations. Interpersonal skills. Ability to work with diverse populations. Skills in service orientation, active listening, and critical thinking. Experience with problem identification and reasoning. Ability to multitask. Strong verbal communication, written communication, and organizational skills. Knowledge and/or ability to learn of federal regulations as they pertain to international students and scholars Knowledge of federal web-based systems, i.e. SEVIS. Eligibility to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) with federal agencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/Training:
Master's degree required in the area of student personnel administration or related field.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week) non-exempt career position, which is paid bi-weekly and eligible for full UC Benefits. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $28.74 - $31.13.
