Departmental Overview
The Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA) reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of California, Berkeley and serves as the portal for faculty access to industry, and for industry access to the Berkeley campus, both for research relationships and access to Berkeley technology. The Industry Alliances Office (IAO) within IPIRA is responsible for a comprehensive range of research relationships with industry, including: industry-sponsored prime research agreements, industry subcontracts under Federal prime contracts, sub agreements to industry under prime grants and contracts to UC Berkeley, funded and unfunded industry collaboration agreements, industry consortia membership agreements, incoming material transfer agreements, and nondisclosure agreements. "Industry" includes for- profit corporations, grant making functions within an industrial entity, and industry sponsored foundations.
The Industry Contracts and Alliances Specialist position reports to the IAO Director or IAO Associate Director and works closely with its peer divisions within IPIRA, the Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) and Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, to cultivate and maintain relationships with industry partners and to craft intellectual property, publication, confidentiality, and other terms and conditions in various agreements that further the research, education and public service mission of the University of California while establishing and nurturing relationships with industry that ultimately benefit the public. Intellectual property terms in research agreements may describe any or all of the following: invention disclosures, prosecution, ownership, and maintenance of patents, copyrights, copyright licensing, and use of name and trademarks. The IAO also coordinates various pre- and post- award research contract administration tasks with the campus Sponsored Projects Office (SPO), the Contract and Grant Accounting (CGA) Office, and academic departments.

Responsibilities
The Industry Contracts and Alliances Specialist independently drafts, negotiates, and executes research-related contracts of any complexity, including industry sponsored research, material and data agreements, and other related agreements, and ensures such contracts comply with applicable laws, regulations and policies. Engages in negotiating contracts on behalf of the UC Regents.
Designs, negotiates, creates and establishes industry alliance programs, industry sponsored institutes, and innovation and entrepreneurship programs, including brokering, developing, sustaining,and expanding partnerships and engaging partners to maximize the value of the relationship for the University and the organization.
Provides training and support to less experienced contract officers.
Facilitates post-award management, gift vs. grant distinction, negotiation assistance for intellectual property terms from other offices, and consulting on processes, policies, and practices related to intellectual property management.
Facilitates new and established research relationships with companies by providing introductions, advising on the structure of appropriate research relationships, drafting appropriate contracts, and coordinating with other research institutions on subawards or other aspects of collaborative research.
Establishes and maintains professional relationships with industry representatives, provides information to them about campus research programs, about laws and policies that govern contracting practices, and directs them to others when appropriate, and performs alliance management and liaising per industry contractual obligations.
Investigates and mediates departmental and/or contractor complaints, including coordination between multiple parties.
Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of contracting principles and practices, methods and procedures used in research-related activities that result in the creation of intellectual property rights or other research outcomes.
Advanced knowledge of contract law, technology licensing practices, and collaborative research models.
Advanced understanding of or ability to gain knowledge of University's rules, guidelines, policies and practices related to research grants and contracts, research gifts, intellectual property, licensing, and technology commercialization.
Deep understanding of faculty and programmatic research interests within the University.
Skilled communicator: includes verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
Ability to use discretion and respect confidentiality.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills to establish and maintain working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and industry partners, with an emphasis on collaboration, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism, and discretion.
Advanced organizational and project management skills.
Ability to learn from and teach others.
Ability to break down complex concepts and tailor communication to industry partners' unique needs and interests.
Advanced ability to network and meet company representatives on campus or in business or conference settings, represent the university, and foster and grow university-industry research collaborations and sponsored research.

Advanced listening, political acumen skills and problem recognition and conflict resolution skills.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (at least 7-10 years of experience in drafting and negotiating complex university/industry sponsored research contracts and/or advanced central office research administration.)

Master's degree in a relevant area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is up to $146,800.00.
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
This position is exempt and paid monthly.
This is a remote-friendly or hybrid position, eligible for 100% remote capability.
